My 2004 1.8T Jetta likes to make this vibrating rattling noise just around 3000rmp +/- 500rpm. It cuts out when i hit the gas, shift or slow down. Its annoying when im just trying too cruise around thoes rpms. The sound come from the dash area/front of the car.
Has any one else had this issue? what do I do?

    Re: Noise

That is super hard to diagnose. Could be a million things loose and they are just vibrating because of engine vibration.

    Is it loud, quiet
    Is it metalic or plastic
Is it inside the car or outside
Is it to the left or the right
Is it below your feet or above your feet

You need to listen better or have someone else in the car crawl around and find it

Once you localize it then maybe we can offer some suggestions. But you really need to find it if you can. Can you just idle the engine at 3,000 with the car in neutral and will it do it? Does going over bumps affect it?

      Re: Noise

The sound is comming from the top of the dash, it is in the middle so too my right. I don't think its metal, its more of a buzz that slows into a rattle. It makes the noise in all gears, at about fourth gear the engine noise/winter tires dull the noise. Going over bumps has no affect, though when i down shift the noise is loudest at 3000 rmp and gets quieter at around 2750 and is gone by 2400. In lower gears it really over powers my engine and exhaust noise.

A friend had a A4 w/1.8T with a similar issue, only happeded at high rpm's. It ended up being a belt tensioner. Will it do it when parked? Can you listen to it from under the hood?
