  • MAF De-Screening

Has anyone here done this or know orf anyone who did this?

For people who dont knwo what I am talking about on your MAF there are 2 screens in them that are supposedly be there to trap foriegn material. As far as I can I cant see anything getting all the way up there especially when it has to go through are air filter.

Just wondering if anyone gets CEL or any other problems.

I read that descreening can increase your airflow by up to 15 %. Might be worth looking into? thx for the info guys:thumbsup:

Yeah over $300 is what I also think it costs to replace.

Better to do a 3.5 inch ram air intake.

Edit: Ok, it doesn't hurt, but it's not huge - here's the article:

I think another function of that screen is to slow and smooth the airflow before it hits the MAF so it gets a better reading.

Wow that guy is the Einstein of DIY mods. Seems like he knows what he is doing too. I would have liked to have seen him try a CAI at the end of the article to see how much better/worse/same his own "ram air" intake did.

If I get a CAI I will remove the screens and be the guinea pig if you guys want... but that won't be for a lil' while.

removing the screen (AKA air straightener) will cause problems for you... You'll get flucuating idle and very stutered acceleration. Unless you unplug the MAF you're car will not run properly.

The reason is that the diameter of the housing assumes the same amount of air is all around and this is accomplished but the straightener. If more air is at the edges of the housing or the air is twisting the MAF element is going to give different readings. Hold your hand out the car window and you'll feel different levels of air pressure same thing happens with the MAF.

Recomendation. Disconnect it MAF and take out the air box all together and run a 3" pipe straight to the inlet of the turbo with no filter... you'll get kick ass power!
