wipers broken?

well as i was driving to school yesterday i turned on my wipers on to get the bit of snow off my windshield that had fallen while waiting for the light to turn, half way through the motion i hear this kind of sping poping sounds or something, and now the wipers are stuck, pretty much straight up and down and when i turn them on or off nothing happens, this happened about 30 seconds after pulling out of a heated garage so it wasnt a cold factor and there was barely anything on the windshield so there was not a load on them that was too big,

does anyone know what the problem is or what i need to do to fix this? is this something a dealer would charge alot for and something i could get fixed somewhere else? o ya, the car is a 2000 gti if that makes any difference

Sounds like your mechanism is seizing a new mechanism is available aftermarket (generally about $108 most have the VW emblem on them) and anywhere from 1/2 to 1 1/2 to replace depending on how easily they come apart (I have seen them where the arms will not come off).

i had the bolt that connects the wiper linkage to the wiper motor come really loose so the wipers were sloppy (like they would hit bottom, and then hit the side of the window on the way up). I would think that bolt could eventually work it's way right out. there is some plastic under the hood you have to pull off to see the linkage. just a thought...

The bolt on my wiper rack came off a few weeks ago. Take it to the dealer for an easy fix.

Most often the wiper bracket is seized, but like chris said could just be a bolt... 1.5 hours tops.

well i have the car booked in to scfc tommorow, hope its nothing to crazy

Ohh I wouldnt go to SCFC for it. Same thing happened to me, trust me/us its your wiper bracket that has seized. SCFC will likely charge you 1 hour to figure out if its the motor or the bracket, then atleast another hour to fix the broken bracket. Just buy the bracket for about 130ish, SCFC will charge you about $385 to fix it

got it fixed, they work great now, i never realised how fast they should move until now, lol and cost me just over $300
