  • Formula SAE Testing Session: Sunday 10am UofC Lot10

For those interested in this kind of thing we will be doing a large testing session tomorrow (Sunday) in LOT10 at the University of Calgary for our Formula SAE car, a 2/3 scale Formula1 car.

People are welcome to come out and watch, we will have a autocross course set up, skid pad, and acceleration test, in the large parking lot and will be running the car. Definetly a sight to see, 0-60 in 3.5 seconds, pulls approx 1.7G's on the pad, basically a 4 wheel sport bike.

The lot is located just off of 32nd ave NE and the soccer and football fields are directly north of the lot. It is the same access road you take to get to the north entrance of the Olympic oval, as you come up the road we are in the lot on your right (east) side.

Please if you come respect that this is a open test session for a very fast vehicle. Please remain on the outside of the yellow tape and do not try and enter the actual testing area. Children are welcome as are cameras.

We will be there from 10am until 4pm or when we break the thing, whichever comes first.

if you are coming, and i cannot stress this enough; PLEASE drive in a slow and responsible manner in the lot. The fastest way to ruin a kind of event like this for us would be to speed and try and do stupid things. You will not impress anyone. Come in, park, watch, ask questions, take pictures, leave. Thanks.

Re: Formula SAE Testing Session: Sunday 10am UofC Lot10

So we finally got around to get some solid testing done on our '06 chassis since we came back from competition over a month ago. The mood has been low around the team lately due to our downright shitty results we came out with this summer at the two competitions we went to. Call it a lack of testing before, bad design, who knows. But it's a new season, a new year, so it was time to pull the car out of the trailer, let the new members see it and drive the utter snot out of the thing.

We made some modifications to the car to fix some of the issues we were having, cooling, hot starting, etc., and we unleashed it on an empty parking lot for the day.

I had not had a chance to drive this new '06 chassis as it was finished in such a crunch no real open team testing was done, so today was the day. I had driven the old car, and it was fast (relativly speaking). It ran like **** and had tons of issues. This one had none of those problems, it had shorter gears and was pulling harder than ever.

I got in the thing in my firesuit and it was just a little snug to say the least. got the belts cranked down and helmet on and it was time to go. started up, rolled slowly to the entrance of the lot and just hammered it. I have NEVER felt somthing like that in my life. I was absolutly speechless. Jeremy Clarkson explained it kinda the same when he was talking about the Veyron, your right foot is not so much on a accelerator but more of a hyperspace button. Having no movement due to the belts, and little peripheral vision, combined with the fact you are in a parking lot, you bury your foot and everything just becomes a blur. You just get pushed into your seat and the thing rockets across the lot. You really had to think where you were going to punch it because there were little cement islands all over the place and you were there before you could think about it.

I have never ever had so much fun in a vehicle before, and have never felt that kind of sensation. The guys said they could hear me laughing and giggling on my way back round the lot over the engine. It's just silly how fast the thing is, the larger sprocket shortned up the gears a ton and the thing is just ridiculously fast. Definetly going to be a fun year again, I know I'm motivated to do some work.

            Some pics:

for those wondering the car uses a F4i engine out of a CBR600 and weighs just under 500lbs with full fluids. we think with the new gearing and a decent track surface it will run around 3.5 seconds 0-60, and with the G-meter today we were reading just over 1.7G's in the skidpad.

if there is anyone on here from UofA's team please shoot me a PM.

its not a go-kart. go-karts dont have suspension. ya im picky about it, when you have 3 days of monkeys at world of wheels going on about a go-kart it gets old pretty fast

Probably as close to a go kart as a 3/4 scale formula 1 car though wouldnt you say?

It's cool though, I think I saw it run (kinda) at solo 2 somewhere last year. I dont think it beat the deez but I am sure it is capable.. maybe it didnt run or kept spinning out. What type of races were they you entered? Even at solo 2 speeds cars like this benefit lots from wings... large ones! Maybe you arent allowed or you were testing without. Coming from BC you probably know of the phantom , that runs huge wings... locally there is an open wheel racer Land Rover (very loose description) that has one that is about the size of the car. I would guess that more seat time for the driver would be of great benefit too, the difference a good driver can make in any car is huge so it would be good to see it at the track next year.

This is the kind of wing he is talking about my dads old car the "Zola". The "Zola" was a chop between a 76 Zinc chassis and a 75 Lola formula ford chopped about 9 inches. Joe & Harveys car before they built the phantom. The wing started developing downforce at 30KPH when tested at the UBC wind tunnel. Lateral G's 2.0+ with wind. Darryls Land Rover monster that thing is best for the open track with all that power. He recently bought a sports racer so we will see if he tries to put a landrover motor in that.
The other 2 cars are his current open wheelers a 1986 Formula Atlantic (Magnum Chassis w/Ford Cosworth Motor) and the 85 Reynard Formula Ford
