Re: Canada to follow Californias Emission Regulations by 2010
Well I am all for tough regulations on emissions but I think getting rid of diesels in that is maybe not the best answer. Most diesel cars are using less consumption which can be better than some gas cars and really they are not going to ban Semi trucks which probably could use some emission improvements so whats the point. And what about all those heavily polluting lawn mowers out there??
Does California allow diesel pick-up trucks like F250/350s as those are very big for industry here???Blair

Re: Canada to follow Californias Emission Regulations by 2010
once all the new refining processes are underway, and the cleaner fuels reach the pumps, i think new cars will meet the requirements. its the low income families (an people who just like driving old beaters) that will find themselves in a tight spot when the auto registry asks for emissions test results. Off-road, rail, and marine are also going to be largly effected since right now, they can burn whatever they want for fuel - with next to nothing for emission control. There is a stat I saw that hat something like 15% of cars creating 60% of the harmful auto emissions (maybe not quite the right numbers... but you get the point). If you go to Cali., you will likely not see the same beaters/oil burners you see here. Even Vancouver doesnt have that many garbage cars (compared to here). I think you will see a lot of old cars not passing tests before new cars start getting pulled off the market here. By the time they say something like "no more TDIs", there will be better engines.
As for big trucks, Cat (a huge polluter in the past) is coming out with some pretty amaizing engines as far as emissions go. They are clear for use everywhere i think. Of course, Average Joe's Sand and Gravel wont be able to afford such a machine.
Also, a lot of alberta oilfield trucks run without catalitcs, because they start fires. My company just lost a truck due to a grass fire started by the catalitic.
In the end, Alberta could drop emissions significantly without saying bye bye diesels, but I guess we can all just wait and see. I wouldnt put it past this government....Stefan

and if you were that concerned, you would have opted for a 2.0, not a VR6....Last edited by stefan; 09-22-2006, 10:50 AM.Stefan

The funny thing is they allow large gasoline vehicles such as the Escalade etc to be sold yet little diesels are going to be outlawed? If Californias regulations are so excellent then why the **** are they suing automakers right now? lol What a joke
The E320 CDI doesn't even make their standards (And they won't allow urea injection iirc so no Blutec either).
Why can't we just follow Euro4 regulations or something like that.

note that VW isnt one of the automakers on the list... so at least VW gassers must be ok.Stefan

uggghhhh
california's laws are only coming about because of extensive lobbying by certain interest groups. you think that the diesels having stricter emissions laws for 2007 is a coincidence? I can guarantee you there were certain groups supporting/selling gasoline engines/cars lobbying hard to have diesels put back a few steps. They were losing market share to them and as it works in the states if you have money you can have a very large soap box.
emissions testing is nothing but a cash cow. they do it in vancouver and it has proven nothing in terms of cutting down the amount of emissions. what SHOULD be done is better urban planning to stop urban sprawl or to create different work centers. Better cleaner alternatives like mass public transit, etc.Team Highschool
