  • Importing WIP's

Hey Guys, was looking at how cheap it would be to bring in mk2 from Japan and it turns out they are pretty uncommon over there (a few cabbies but thats it)

Anyways - then i looked into importing an e30 bmw which has always been a dream project of mine...they are cheap as hell, im shocked. I figure something must be up because the guys from this site are saying I could get a 4+ rated (high grade) '91 320 or 325 for 230-300k yen (300k yen is roughly 3,000 cdn) Even after i got a ballpark on the shipping from their site it was under 5k...

Does this seem fishy to anyone? Site is www.japaneseusedcars.com

Wouldn't you look at bringing a car from Europe, probably some better examples to choose from?

Oh, they do..its kind of a cool concept...Its guys from GB and NZ and AUS that work and live in japan doing car exports

edit: Ya blair, i have no preference of where it comes from, i just havent found that many good sites - any idea of a german export site or something?

Don't buy anything from Japan... They're cheap for a reason... Because they are no longer road worthy in Japan, and have been beat on their entire lives, or at the very least, driven in extreme grid-lock traffic their entire life.

A prime example is all the jdm dorifto machines running around nowadays. Most of the ones around here (s'toon) blow up in a few months, or take thousands of $'s to pass inspections

well, it'd be a project car, not a car I would expect to run around in for years and years. If the engine goes, so be it, e36 M3 engine here I come

but you're right, thats why they are cheap, 50k there is the equiv of 150+ here...I wouldnt say they arent road worthy however because the chasis and bodies of the cars are mint (and interiors in most cases)

edit: I did check Ebay, but i dont know anyone in germany who I trust so thats out...and air fare tehre and back would increase the cost of that car by, like...Double haha

                  Re: Importing WIP's

you must first look into the legality of whether the car is even allowed in the country or not. Canada has a fairly strict set of rules in the RIV regarding blacklists and when cars can and cannot come into the country.

That would be the first place to start, do some reading and make sure everything complies. Most cars cannot be imported until the 15 year blacklist time period is up, which is why the R32 skyline can come in but the R34 is not yet allowed. When cars do arrive they must be made to spec Canadian road laws and this may include some modifications to seatbelts, lights, etc.

ya, all the cars im looking at are 91 or earlier so that wont be an issue...once the car hits 15 years they dont seem to care about the safety of it (RHD cars in canada.. )

I would love an RS2 when they become available.. currently only the S2 is.. which still isnt any slouch!

From what I have heard is that if it was a write off that no one would know here in Canada. So you could buy a car from Japan that was a write off, got repaired then shipped here. I maybe wrong though.

ya i pick up my car tonite, as long as you shop around for the right car, you shouldnt be dissapointed.you should get a high auction grade, and make sure its dead stock ( to limit the amount the car has been bagged on)mods=stress on the car, plus it means the car has been **** bagged. my car has 50,000kms and 4.0 grade.so i think i got a screaming deal for the price i paid....( but we will see tonite)
so stock cars would typically be in better shape and last longer.
