  • Cracked oil pan... where to go for repair??

While I was getting my oil changed, the tech told me that there is a slight crack in my oil pan. So I headed down to the nearest dealership to find out the price of a repair, to my surprise they quoted me at 2 hours of service ($180), and a new oil pan for $298

Is there anywhere else besides a VW dealership that i might be able to repair my oil pan for cheaper?

Did you replace it yourself or at a shop?

Our original pan was close to 600 bucks to replace, I shattered mine as well.

However, VW has taken fire for how easy our pans break. The new MK4 pans are two piece with a metal plate on the bottom that can be unbolted and replaced for much cheaper than an entire pan. I presume that's what the dealership is trying to sell you. Personally I'd buy the redesigned unit. If my pan cracks again, I will.

Now I'm only assuming they are using the 2 piece unit because the price is cheaper. If they are just discounting an original pan, might as well get the cheapest one that will fit.

I guess the dealership wouldn't be too happy if i walked up to them with an oil pan that i bought from somwhere else for cheaper and asked if they could install it on my car.

i said go to tunedub and get it installed there, thats where i went. you could go to dealership, they dont care if you bring in your own parts, as long as they are vw parts... you can tell them to install the revised pan too.

Maybe a welding shop can weld the crack. It's aluminum I think.

              edit:
try montgomery autoparts in calgary or black gold imports in edmonton for a used one.

....but I think my suggestions are useless since you need someone to do the removal/installation.

I can get pans for a lot cheaper than that if people need them.
