Need some advice

Hi guys this post is really off but im in need of some advice. I've got a job interview coming up next week and i know my current employer will give me a bad reference. I know this because I have had 3 other employee's tell me because they were also suspicous so they set up a 'fake interview' and called the supervisor and he gave a bad reference. At work my supervisor and me get along very well but i just know for some reason he will give me a bad reference. Hes the type of guy who dosent want to see any suceed even though hes nice on the outside.

Please help what am i supposed to say when at the interview i am asked for my current employers contact info?

Tell the interviewer something along the lines of what you've said above...

Say with the current employment market your supervisor has said he doesn't want you to leave, or something along those lines.

I never give my current boss as a reference simply because then they know you're interviewing and might cut you loose early.

Don't use your curent employer as a reference, use jobs that you have done in the past where you know you will get a good reference, you have to sell yourself and using a reference you know is bad is not a good idea. You don't have to give them your current employers info just say you are employed but are looking for a job more suited to your skills etc.

I was discussing this with someone before as well. The conclusion many people come to is to use a colleague, not your boss as a reference. For example, if you have someone in your department who may be in a higher position than you, but not neccesarily your boss.... use them.

Danielle had this happen 2 months ago, she applied for another job in the avionics field, and her now-former supervisor gave her a bad reference. Danielle confronted her on that, and she said "I did what I had to so you wouldn't leave"......It's very underhanded, and quite disrespectful. As an employee you have the choice to work where you want to, thats not up to your current supervisor to decide. I think there is actually a law against giving out a false bad reference, afterall it does look bad on your character.

yea thats true alex.. really all they are supposed to say is 'no comment' which kinda means bad comment but they can't say 'this person sucks'

That's the reason a lot of larger companies do not allow their employees to give references, all they are allowed to say is that you were employed from "this day to this day" because if you think about it, if Danielle was going for more money, better benefits, etc. she could sue he current company for losses due to the fact that the information given was untrue. If it was substantial that could really drag a company through the mud and cost them (more so in the higher levels though).

Yea, it is illegal to give a bad reference.
Sears fired me and said I could still use them as a reference, the only info they would disclose was when to when i was employed and how much i was paid.

from what i know, its pretty much illegal to give ANY sort of a reference (you're allowed to say 'ya, so-and-so worked here for X number of months' but thats the extent of it)

now in reality this probably doesnt happen...but like someone above said just give a reference of someone you DONT report to that knows the sort of work you do (for example, a project manager that you worked with)

I used a co-worker and a supervisor from another department who im close with and work with on a regular basis.

you cannot give a bad referencem neither in writing or verbally. It is slander or libel and are grounds for a lawsuit on defamation of character.

All they can say is "yes i can confirm XXXXX was employed with the company from this period to this period". Usually when people only say that and nothing else it tells the person inquiring somthing is up.

I prefer to use written letters of reference. They sound and look more professional and you know exactly what is said about you. You can also be guaranteed that if somthing happens to your reference, you still have it. I have seen people leave places and then you are SOL with references.
