  • Setup home LAN.

Since my computer skills in this area are lacking, anyone want to come to my place and setup my network for me? It has to have basic security, encryption and so forth... but nothing fancy. Obviously I would pay this person. If you you're interested, just PM me.

    Thanks.

LOL... it seems like I'm always on here asking for computer help

I can't seem to get the telus connection to come through my LAN, only hardwired. I'll give it another shot tonight, and if that doesn't work..... I'll be back tommorow with questions.

Once I get the LAN setup though, how do I add security to it? (ie: encryption and password protected?)

your router will have a password option under a admin tab.. something like that.. if its wireless you'll want to set up a WEP key too. i can crack wep no problem but i doubt you'll have to worry about it..

If you are using Telus with a router you need to have the router set to a MAC address you have registed with Telus or it won't work.

yes, you can also go to the OCS part of the telus site and make sure that the MAC address is correct....its easiest to have the router "clone" the MAC address of the modem

Plug the router in, get the mac address (it's usually the serial number) and phone them. I HATE the system because it's so pointless.

wow...thats srsly retarted haha, im so glad I avoided telus as an ISP (bandwidth limitations FTL!)

What bandwidth restrictions? I know Shaw has restrictions and monitors your bandwidth and that telus started to do so but I have only ever got one letter for excessively over 100gig. I logged into my telus accoudn the other day and say I had a 30gig limit (which I was already over) but never hear much from them.

technically they both have restrictions but Telus seems to monitor better (ive done 300+gb a month for 12 months straight before i got a phonecall from shaw)

you don't need to call your mac address in, I'm sure that will work, but there's a site that you can access before your MAC address is registered. Its in your Telus install guide that they give you...

Only problem with shaw is they will hand over your info without blinking an eye (to the RIAA etc). I have heard stories that Shaw hands out notices when you use large amounts of bandwidth, now that would be fun to frame.

Never heard of this before....not saying that it wouldn't happen if there is a LEGAL case to do so. It would not be the RIAA coming for you, but the RCMP.

Telus, COMCAST, Rogers... as with all Service Providers will have the same obligations when a legal issue is being actioned. Read into this statement as you wish....

Indeed, bandwidth abuse does have a cycle in Shaw:
                          1) phone call
                          2) 2nd phone call and email
                          3) If they have not reached you by step 1, or 2, a "reminder" letter to the account owner/holder.

Telus etc has similar protocols, but not as friendly from the few I've read. Shaw's "reminder" is Telus' WARNING of INFRACTION (I think that's the actual wording).

Back to original thread: if you still need help with this, send me a PM....

Those warning of infraction letters are funny
