  • Digital Camera Options

Well with me taking my big vacation this year the time is here to purchase a digital camera. Since there are some big photo buffs here I am looking for suggestions on what camera will be best for me.

I really just want an all round good camera, not too large, good battery life and practical for lots of outdoor shots, maybe a good zoom to make sure those Pyramids look great in the distance I am not entirely sure on price but I would say $400-600 range, so I would appreciate any insight and or recomendations people can make as there are so many choices out there.

    Thanks

Bring back good memories, out of all the places I have been it is still one of my favorite.

We looked at the PowerShot S3 IS (Canon) which for the price seemed to be a great camera, we ended up with another model but you may want to check it out.

DSLR all the way......Depends on how much you want to spend...You can buy a nice used DSLR (like dereks!), or an older Canon for around $600..... There is a fantastic deal on a Nikon D50 right now on beyond!! But there is a learning curve....if you don't want to practise everyday until your vacation, a higher end "prosumer" or point and shoot may be the way to go.....Think Nikon coolpix series, or the canon powershots.....

If you want something really small, really good, and moderately priced... I'd recommend the Canon PowerShot SD700IS. It's brand new... should be available this month. I'm going to get one as soon as they come out. The stuff I like about this camera is; incredibly small and light, 4x zoom, true Canon image stabalization (a first for the uber small camera market), 2.5" screen on the back, fast, oh and did I mention rediculously small and light!

          Have a look...

            Four things:

            1. Wide Angle lense - the most stunning photos are almost always wide angle, the industry is getting better, look for something that approaches 20mm wide angle (this is a standardized/effective number, don't read the 7.2mm off the lense and think it's wide angle) Here's an example of a wide angle shot http://www.pbase.com/kuhli2/image/50598622 Incidentally, your demo photo would look far better with a wide angle!
            2. Low light focus performance - go ahead try to take a shot inside with standard indoor light, you'll know what I'm talking about. Some cameras can't find the focus. A blurry photo that was in focus is better than a blurry photo that was out of focus.
            3. Colour - select something that meets your taste, if you look at dpreview.com's samples you'll understand quickly which manufacturers suit you.
            4. Manual control - this one's optional, if you're a big fan(or aspiring) of photography, you must have manual control...otherwise...

Hmmm, DIG!C II processor and 800iso to boot. Sounds pretty nifty. I've been looking for a small pocket camera myself for snapshot use when I don't have my dslr. I had a chance to try the Sony T9 a little while ago and I fell in love with how pimp that thing is. Super fast start up, awesome design, big LCD, and credit card sized. Do you have any thoughts on this model Bill?

My girlfriend has that little Sony cam - but it might be an earlier version (she got it in Oct.) It takes really good shots and is super portable.

Aleks - where's that Beyond post about that D50?

Thanks for some input and views, I am liking the Canon Powershot S80 at the moment, some wide angle, 8mp, compact and lots of modes.

                    Re: Digital Camera Options

Don't forget about the lense speed, sales people won't talk about it and there isn't too much variety, but it's worth considering.

Regarding ISO, It's a matter of how much noise the camera will produce at a given "ISO", remember this is digital and ISO is an artificial creation to some extent...
