My polling station was also very busy when I went to vote so think the turnout seemed pretty good. I am not happy with the results but neither am I surprised. I am just not a fan of Mr. Harper and some of his policies but I think having him in a slight minority is the way to go. With Martin stepping down this could lead to some interesting events to come just hope we dont have to vote again in a year.
oh, i'd give it at least 18 months

Sure not all of his policies are great, but would you rather have a government that has been stealing from you for the past 5 or so years?
IMO its the lesser of two evils..
Well I do think that the conservatives could waste a lot more money then the liberals especially when Harper never even explained how they would pay for all these new perks he offered up, so maybe he will never go through with them or just run a deficit????
I am very against the combination of Church and State and this Tory party seems much too close to that for my liking.

I agree, I am not a big supporter of the Tory government but I think the change will be good for Canada and the Liberal party. I think the election out come sends a strong message to the Canadian government that we are not a apathetic voting community that is afraid of change with in the government ranks, and we are not going to tolerate a government that cheats, lies and steals from us.
Stephen Harper has been given a great opportunity to dismiss all the fears that the Conservative party is a group of Red Hecks from the west (a fear the I some what share). We will see in the coming months how our new government takes shape... I think it is very exciting!

I don't think it's so much "Church and state" I think it's more of seeing a level of Morality that we haven't seen in Politics in a long time. Personally i'm not a flaming Conservative but at the same time I'm happy to see someone take a stand for family values, which is, let's face it, the least popular stance these days. I believe very strongly with marriage uniting a man and wife, and having children etc. Everyone's afraid to take a stand for these things because it's not "politically correct" but sometimes I think we need to think about our identity as a country, the health of our children, and our roots not just try and be the most trendy and "forward thinking" country.
Who's family values? The Conservatives? Run my country not my life.

Let's just say "Traditional" (bad word but only one I have at the moment) family values. The idea that a man and a woman come together and create a bond and new life. Am I descriminating or closed minded? I don't think I am, if you want to know more about me or what i've done around this subject just ask you might be surprised. Does that make me a "homophobe"? No, why should it?
I don't think they are telling anyone how to run their life any more so then the Liberals want us all to accept it. If the Conservatives are running your life with their stance, does that mean the Liberals were running mine with THEIR stance?
BTW: if you think I feel this way because I had a "perfect family" fuggedaboudit
I just feel that the family values really don't need to be involved as we dont all have the same values. Government should be run like a business getting the job done while trying to not operate at a loss and all citizens should have the access to education, healthcare etc no matter what religion, race, age or gender they may or may not be. Hot topics like gay marriage and abortion only cloud the issues and cost time and money that could be better spent. I know it is hard to seperate these items out but it should not be the governments job to decide what is best for you it should be your choice!

I agree with you, alot!
The conservatives have not brought together church and state; but merely reinstituted morality to the table in Politics. I think forward thinking can be a great thing, and it has helped our country get to the point where it is now. However, people always seem to confuse forward thinking with total Liberalism.... which is not the case.
I like having a Tory Minority. I wouldn't want Harper to have a Majority, and I think this gives the Tories and opportunity to prove their worth, before being handed the keys entirely.
Simply put, and this is stricly my opinion.... the NDP have proven their inability in MB and socialism has shown its weaknesses in the UK. The Liberals have proven their corruption, and in time that will hopefully change.
BTW.... anyone watch the Rick Mercer Report yesterday? The guy is hilarious!

Well stated and I agree with the healhtcare and education comment 100%. I also agree that the "hot topics" cloud some of the issues, I would like nothing more for a lot of this stuff to be left out as well, if only that could happen. BUT, I also feel that I shouldn't be discriminated against for my feelings and beliefs any more than anyone else, which I sometimes feel is not the case.
Also, some of these things are being put into LAW, which means that it ISN'T a choice anymore.

That doesn't work in reality Blair, it can't. Family values will always be involved in Politics, since they define the "base morality". Business have a moral obligation, and so does the government. How you define that moral obligation may change, but there is "always" a moral obligation. The government is there to define and implement the views of the country, and if they don't, then mayhem ensues.

All this talk of instituting "traditional family values" upon the masses is greatly troubling to me. As a free country with a Charter that guarantees those freedoms, why should the government tell me how to live my life? I speak mainly of the social aspects of life. Canada is a nation of immigrants and minorities. A big difference in the implementation of Liberal and Conservative idologies on social issues is that the Liberals were attempting to extend freedoms where they did not exist, while not denying them to the people who already enjoyed them. Some conservatives want to repeal rights granted to certain groups, because they don't morally agree with their conduct. Granting "seperate but equal" rights to groups is clearly and unequivically NOT equal. Government should stay out of telling people how to live their life.
Having said that, while I am socially very liberal, and am fiscally very conservative, and am excited about how the conservatives might implement change in that regard. I am fairly confident that the "extremeist" element of their party will not be able to influence much social change, but it still worries me a little.

I agree the governement is there to run the country I live in not to tell me what I can and can't believe in. Yes I believe in family values etc but that is my view and I have no right to push that belief on anyone else and neither does the governement. The world is not black and white anymore so why should we live in the dark.
