I guess I'm ghetto cause I have laminate.....you'll spend over 3X the cost with real hardwood, and the maintenance is higher too....I guess I'm not as baller as you guys....the housing market right now doesn't care if you have freakin dirt floors, as long as its a house in calgary.....if you're in a house you're not gonna stay in, why?? Plus, in entry level homes and townhouses, you don't need to go all out, thats not the market you're selling to...in a big luxury house, yes, but otherwise its not necessary!

And Ryan, is this a thread about Laminate, or modding your car?? In every post you make a reference to it.......

I bet if you got an UPsolute chip instead of APR you would have enough leftover to buy the laminate flooring

Hahaha, and Blair ties it all together

On starter houses (basically what I own) I would agree with Alex. Hardwood IS nice but was more expensive (I even went to timbr town) and I don't plan on staying here that long (probably 2 more years or so) so it was a good compromise. I don't really want to upgrade my house so it's the most expensive "starter" house on the block because that has it's drawbacks too.

Also, Hardwood (somewhat depending on wood) is actually softer then laminate so if pets are a consideration think about that. Also, laminate requires no maintenance which makes me happy. I could go on.

Would I do it differently next time? Maybe, I do really like hardwood and I know some people find laminate "cheap" but there are ups and downs to both.

Timber town has 2 locations I think...one off 32nd ave in the north and one sorta...on the other side of blackfoot from C1....they have some seriously well priced hardwood.

The reason everyone thinks hardwood is expensive is because it costs as much per sq/ft to have installed as it does to buy!!

Lots of people do, unfinished hardwood needs lots of sanding etc but loks deadly in the end.

i'd look at installation since i'm a lazy sod most of the times when it comes to such things.. course i could take a few days off work to kill vacation days and probably figure it out.

All I know is what I paid and what friends have paid to do laminate...and it was on par or cheaper for the hardwood from timbertown. Like I said, look at the C and D grade cause the a,b stuff so gawd damn expensive..I like the knotted look peronally anyhow so it works for me!

I even got the 3/4inch wide boards, standard is 1/2 so with the 3/4 its an easier install

It cost me $3200 to do my whole main floor in laminate. The quotes I got for (decent)hardwood were all ~10gs

                          Re: Laminate flooring

                          Hey guys,
Don't post here too often... but l thought l'd throw a little info in. l work in the design feild, couple things
-not all laminates are cheap... basically there are two types of laminates: printed paper laminates, and veneer laminates. Paper is the cheapest (obvious) but the veneers are awesome, they use real wood (usually 1/8" thick) so it's as close to full on hardwood as you get, its usually harder than hardwood (depending on the wood) and is super easy to install, little to no up keep. Most have unique locking T&G click systems... and some have fiberglass cores etc, super strong and prevent warping.
-stick will euporean made veneer flooring... their quality standards are much higher than northamerican... look for Kahr's, or Torlys brands. both have various grades, thicknesses, wood finishes, etc. Stop by Kensington Floors they will give you all the info you need to make a educated purchase.
-as noted by others, hardwood is expensive, more upkeep, usually softer than a laminate... stick with tile in the kitchen if possible, or any area's with potential for sitting water.

Anyways, hope that helps...great for resale too... good luck!

our new house is all hardwood on the main floor except a small section by the fireplace which is carpet. when the hardwood arrived, its funny how it was marked with "gps tracking" lol ya right.

                              Re: Laminate flooring

I have pre-finished hardwood in my place and will have it in the new pad as well. I really like it. But like a few ppl already said, laminate will do just fine in a starter home, especially if you have kids or pets.

Even the cheaper laminate looks pretty decent imo.

i have laminate in my bedroom... it looks great after 4 years and was easy to put down.

we just had pre-finished hardwood put down in the entire downstairs. looks really nice.

eaither one is good in my books. cost for pre-finished HW is about 30-40% more than laminate
