anybody have experience with this stuff and installing it yourself?
I'm going to do some reno on my place and bachelor pad it up a bit more and am going to start with my kitchen as a test as its pretty square and easy enough..

so far i picked up an entire new set of black leather furniture.. going to replace the tele with a plasma, new surround sound stuff, and get a bell HDTV setup going.. so the S4 is being neglected.. what what!?

I think we discussed this before not that long ago. I tried to search but it seems to be non functional at the moment.

Yes, I installed laminate (mostly because I'm only gonna be in the house for a couple years, and the hardwood I wanted the dog woulda destroyed!).....as for install, it took no time, just lay it and tap it so the locking grooves fit well.....I also decided to lay a thin strip of glue into mine just for extra measure, infact they recommend that for commercial applications......don't cheap out on underlay, thats very important.....other than that, I did my livingroom, and its not square at all, and it took about a day to rip out, reinstall, etc.....I also did new baseboards with that....Next up is the upstairs hallway and the staircase, that should be fun!

If you use that laminated cheap stuff on your kitchen flor gauranteed it will be ruined within a month, that stuff absorbs water and peals at the edges. If you want real pimp (and done right) heat and tile the kitchen then real hardwood the rest. Expensive yes but you will make it all back and interest when you sell the place.

Ryan I would go Hardwood as well. That's what I have in my kitchen, and it's great!

If you get the pre-fab stuff (tongue and groove), you can do the whole kitchen quite easily, and without breaking the bank.... Leaving more $$ for the S4. I know a friend who did his kitchen and livingroom in one weekend. You can look into it a HD or Rona, and they can give you all the info and pricing.

dude, just install the hardwood yourself. I did the entire main floor of my place (about the same size as your pad) in a weekend with the help of my pops and mr.burns.

Go to timber town and look at what they have for deals...I think I got the C and D grade wood (meaning it has more knots in it and stuff) but it looks freakin deadly and was cheaper than laminate!

                    Re: Laminate flooring

We did the whole main floor of my parent's house in laminate 4 years ago.
At the time, it was mid-high end laminate, and it looks the same today as it did 4 years ago.
No warping or buckling. The only thing I don't like is how it sounds like you're walking on plastic (which really you are). It's in the kitchen and everything. It has had water spilled on it more times than I can count, and there has been no de-lamination, lifting of corners, swelling or anything.

That said, I would never put it in my house. I think it's kind of ugly. I would put in hardwood if I could possibly afford it, otherwise I would carpet all I could until the cost was down enough to put hardwood in the rest of the rooms

I have to say, I'm not too sure where you saw that, but laminate nowadays is problem free, if you buy good stuff......anyhow, kitchens should be tiled, not wood....

I have been really liking some of the cork floors lately. Maybe worth looking into.

I have maple hardwood throughout the entire main floor of my place and after 5 years it has been fabulous, money well spent.

I think you get the point Ryan....DON'T LAMINATE! If there is one thing that you never want to 'cheap out' on, it's definately flooring. Although laminate WOULD do the trick, you'll never get your money back when selling. By tiling (which I personally think is better in kitchens) or laying hardwood, you are eliminating alot of hassles. Don't forget that lino can even get cuts in it by simply dropping knives and such.

I guess it's kind of like a car.....spend your money right the first time
