  • Need some computer help

I'm having trouble finding a way to transfer some rather large video files from my Home desktop computer to my laptop so I can edit the video footage and make a DVD. Does anyone know how I can transfer files ie. >4gb to my laptop?

    Your help is much appreciated.

    Physically?

If both machines have ethernet, I would connect them that way.

If you have a router/hub you can plug them both into the router/hub.

If not you can use a crossover cable (I think) which is fairly cheap to buy.

    Does this help?

Or do you mean more like what software you need / how to setup windows?

Both machines are on wireless internet connections. If I go buy a crossover ethernet cable would I just be able to "plug and play"? One of my friends mentioned setting up an FTP, would that work?

Okay, if they are both on wireless, you don't need any cables. Depending on your wireless connection you may not get the same speeds as with a cable, but it will work. Newer cable-ethernet is at gigabit speeds (125 Megabytes/sec) while I think the best wireless is 55 megabit (6.8 Megabytes/sec). Your mileage may vary based on what the PC and laptop are equipped with.

To transfer the files I would just use windows file sharing. If both computers are on a wireless router, you should be able to see them in the windows "Network Neighbourhood". On windows each machine has a default "Shared Files" folder that you can put things in that you want to share (without having to set up your own sharing permissions).

You can setup an FTP server but this is a huge hassle IMO.

Ok, so I must have my wireless connection setup wrong because I cannot see either computer in the my network places. I also tried connecting the computers with a firewire cable with no success. So I have no idea what to do now.

Total amateur speaking here, but wouldn't it be easiest to just rip your file to CD with the desk top computer (assuming you have CDRW drive) and then put the CD in the laptop and copy from CD to hard drive?

Normally thats what I would do, but the problem is file sizes are larger than 4.7gb. A cd is 650mb a dvd is 4.7gb.

                      Re: Need some computer help

you have to make sure windows firewall is turned off too.... and share a folder on the one computer of course...

alternatively i have a usb cable for linking 2 computers so you can xfer files that way, if you want to borrow it its yours.

                        Re: Need some computer help

                        Right-click "My Network Places"

                        Choose "Properties"

Click the "Advanced" menu on top

                        Choose "Network Identification"

                        Click "Change..." button

Make sure both computers have the same value for "Workgroup"

You may also have success disconnecting your internet but making sure both computers are still connected to the wireless network router (unplug the internet input to the router).

                        Good luck.

simply map to the other pc's IP

just type in the address bar \\internalip\C$

                          enter the user/pass

                          drag n droppage away..

wait 3 hours and go see king kong

Thanks Kor, Bart and Ryan I finally got it. That stupid Windows Firewall was still enabled eventhough I've never used it.

                            Thanks again everyone!

told you firewall you'd think that for networking sharing it would know to turn itself off or let you in.
