  • Question for the computer guys and gals

For the folks in the computer biz: How much does a freelance graphic designer charge by the hour? Or is it project based? Just wanted to get some ballpark figures for some graphic work that should (IMO) only take like a weekend to do.

    Thx

I am in the computer biz and I have no idea. I wouldn't pay a graphic designer by the hour since I don't think that you can really estimate how long its going to make to create something that looks good. What looks good to one person could be ugly to someone else. I would probably try to arrange a by-the-project or per-graphic fee.

$65 to $85 per hour for high quality technical work for oil and gas co's downtown. Poorer work...45 to 65...non technical, I'd say 35 to 55.

Freelance design work varies (as mentioned in a previous post), but I think that if it's pretty basic stuff and the person doing it isn't Michaelangelo, you could pay him/her $25 / hour. But just be sure to have them quote you the number of hours they think it will take them!

              Personally, I wouldn't pay more than $45 / hour.

              Hope this helps!

Never seen a rate that low downtown. And yes, that's only on contracting, keep in mind....

$65 * 20 hours per week * 48 weeks (don't get paid on holidays) = about $62,000 pre corporate and personal taxes.

And, you spend the other half your time begging for work and being hammered down on rates, addressing concerns from people who don't understand the work, not getting paid for work people don't like, chasing late or non-existent payment and have no job security. Also, on occassion you get to pull all nighters like when you were in school...

But if you're good you could make good dough. Good means a good business person, not a good designer incidentally...

I know a contractor who charges over $100/hour however he can only get work about 6mo/year and does have to spend a lot of money advertising himself and on incidental expenses. I think in the end he is well-off in terms of his salary but not getting rich or anything.

Well a contractor with a good accountant can often pay way less tax then on salary but thats a whole nother discussion.
