    Re: xbox 360..... PGR3

A buddy of mine pre-ordered 3 of them. Sold everyone on E-bay yesterday for between $1300 and $1800 USD.

I didn't have the cash at the time of the pre-order. :(

All the reports that I have seen have computed the cost of the machine based upon retail or moderately dicounted pricing of the components. I am certain that MS has squeezed the suppliers to within fractional %'s of profitability on every component in that thing and at worst they are losing maybe $20 per unit and likely making about that (which is a pretty typical margin for consumer grade electronics).

With the first Xbox Microsoft was losing money to grab market share but this time they are in for money so I would imagine they have tightened the margins and costs and they will probably be looking for profits quickly this time around.

"BusinessWeek has taken a look at the insides of the XBox 360 and with the a little help from market researcher iSuppli determined that Microsoft is continuing its tradition to taking a big loss on the console in hopes of making a profit on games. From the article: "An up-close look at the components and other materials used in the high-end version of the Xbox 360, which contains a hard drive, found that the materials inside the unit cost Microsoft $470 before assembly. The console sells at retail for $399, meaning a loss of $71 per unit -- and that is just the start. Other items packaged with the console -- including the power supply, cables, and controllers -- add another $55 to Microsoft's cost, pushing the loss per unit to $126."

I read that article too, however, its impossible for businessweek to know what MS's pricing was. They base that on published wholesale prices. I am sure MS gets a better deal if not cost on some products.

I agree. Insider reports have been stating that MS recieved 90% of the parts needed for the 360 at cost, and the other 10% of parts at a miniscule 2% over cost. Although they are still losing money on the consoles, I would expect it to be way less that the $125 being speculated....probably more like $75 or even lower. Nonetheless, selling a product at a loss and hoping for games sales to pick up the slack would be a death sentence for any company other than MS....I'm sure they'll end up making another billion or two with the new Xbox

That was quoted total before assembly costs, shipping, packaging, marketing and retailer markup. So my guess is that they are still lossing alot. Also no chip company in their right mind is going to sell at cost when M$ custom stamped all the IC's in the box.

They are probably losing money, especially with pushing the limits like they are, how much they are losing is anyones guess. They are only doing what many have done in the past, sell the machine cheap and make lots on the stuff that runs on it, it doesn't only work with video games. And MS will probably make money, I think that was the goal in the whole thing. But remember, technology prices decline rapidly, so in 6 months time they may be paying 1/2 for certain parts. I think Sony will have a tough act to follow, and rumour has it at today's current cost of parts, the Sony will have to be double to have the same profit (or loss as the case may be), plus all the features they were able to incorporate into the 360 (media centre and whatnot).

And before a Sony vs. Microsoft debate breaks out, let us remember that Sony as a Corporation is no better than Microsoft (Can you say malicious spyware?)

Having some xboxs fail is no surprise to me, the fact that they made it past automated testers isn't even surprising. We can do a huge run of boards at work and sometimes there will still be bugs after the whole batch has been inspected and touched up. I believe sony has also released they they will not cut the price of the PS3 to be so low that they lose money. Hence that is the reason I think there is no solid specs for their hardware yet and that it is going to be a long while before we see it. I also think the PS3 is going to get killed, M$ has added so much multifunctionality to the 360 and the fact that noone trusts sony right now will be enough to kill it at launch.

Its sad to see there are still Sony fanboys out there though, claiming the PS3 will be the best.....I'm just not convinced.....There was an interesting thread on another board about technology cost too....They went thru the progression of the PS2 prices, started over $600, and is now available at costco for $164! Thats what I paid for my PS1 though many years ago....The Xbox still remains in the $250-300 range, and still sells strong...
