  • Help looking for photos of Smart and SUV

Hey Where can I find those photos of the Accident of the Smart with the SUV?

I'm trying to state my point on how safe Smarts are to a few ppl on the Airriders board.

sure they may be safe, but if i were to collide with another car, i rather be in one that weighs more.

Ya, they can show me every test in the world but when you can fit under trucks that you see every day....in europe, sure, your chances of getting hit by a truck are pretty slim, but in alberta every 2nd vechicle is a truck!

So you flip the truck and go rolling away. As long as the smart is bounced off and not stopped dead (ie, ramming perfectly headon with a garbage truck), you're better off with it's modern passenger safety cocoon.

I'll slam into a brick wall in a smart long before I do it in a Ford F150 (watch the crash test videos).

It's not about the vehicle staying in better shape, it's how fast your internal organs come to a stop before they burst into mush. A Jetta vs an older SUV head on, the jetta guy will get a less abrupt deceleration because of the better crumpling. With modern cars, sudden deceleration is more likely to kill you than the passenger compartment actually being compromised enough to kill you (exception being Tboned by another vehicle with a different bumper height - but that's something else)

I agree. I see those cars as rolling coffins.

Have you seen the height of a Smart car, it is not going under trucks unless they are very high. A Smart is very tall, I sit up higher then regular cars and close to the height of the average SUV. The car is designed to bounce away from most collisions. I have been driving mine for almost a month now and it feels very safe and I would never say this car is a rolling coffin. I do not go looking for Ford F350s to hit head on at 100km/h and I still think this car is safer then a large precentage of cars on the road. Personally I feel size and weight are false senses of security, they can help in some cases but in other they can hurt you just as much.

Well, like I said, you cant convince me otherwise. The size of them, no matter how safe they have proven to be, would make me nervous driving on a highway in this city.

Its the illusion of safety Im lookin for

If you are having this discussion with the Airriders, just mention that you would much rather be in an accident in a new Smart than in an old VW. I have a 1971 beetle, and one of the primary reasons why I dont drive it is that I am scared what would happen if I were in an accident in it.

The speeds on modern roads are too fast for the outdated technology of my 71. They are fine for cruising around in but I feel like a sitting duck when I am in traffic in it.

Re: Help looking for photos of Smart and SUV

Screw supposed safety. If you are planning so much for a crash why don't you plan just as much to NOT CRASH.

If you were really concerned with true safety you would not rely on the true killers and maimers of people: the 2 point seatbelts. You would have a proper 4 point belt. Furthermore if you were really concerned you would wear a helmet. Between a 4 point belt and a helmet people walk away from crashes when going way faster than you will in to things that tend to move considerably less than what most people hit (i.e. walls).

The hype on safety is a complete ploy on the part of the insurance agencies and the manufacturers. The insurance companies only care that you dont DIE. A 'terminal incident' costs them more than 10x than a particularly bad injury claim. The manufacturers like safety gear because it is yet another item to mark up.

If someone is truly concerned with safety they should stop sniping on trivial and contrived crap such as offset impact videos and IIHS ratings (which are crap) and put in a 4 point belt.
