Rumor has it that the Calgary Police have a new photo radar toy. I've heard that they are now placing cameras on the side of the road the look like garbage cans. Although I cannot confirm this, just wondering if anyone else has heard about this?

I think the van parked next to it would be a dead give-away . Not to mention how suspicious a trash can next to a major road might look (van or not).

I think they tried some un-manned units (in vans) in BC before they trashed the whole system. They found that the vehicles were getting busted up when the guy manning it was gone, so that didn't last long. I could be wrong, but I think that's what happened.

that does sound a bit funny, if it is true I could see this trash can taking a beating when someone see's it flash at night

I read about a guy in Edmonton who went postal on one of the un-manned van units.

They're doin' it in the states. Wouldn't surprise me if it makes its way here one day or another. If you do get caught though... be sure to hook up the trash can to your ride and take it for a spin!! Haha...

I saw a police officer come out of a Jeep or like vehicle the other day, unmarked and unobvious with the radar gun.

They did the garbage can thing in Springbank awhile back, but I don't think it was permanant. The pics of the garbage cam you see online are from Britain.

Good news I heard on Top Gear is that many townships with speed cameras in England have reported an increase in deaths, while those without the cameras have seen reductions. All down to the "watching speedo like a hawk and not the road" argument. We may get rid of them yet...

Is it illegal to hit trash cans?

I noticed that the photo radar vehicles have been getting tricky - I saw a minivan with the hazards on. I slammed on my brakes from a good distance like I always do when I spot a car on the side of the road. When I came along side, yup, photo radar. This was on Deerfoot near the douglasdale overpass construction. Surprised that they had hazards on I guess.

Last I heard, it was still not legal to have unmanned photo radar.

I see those on John Laurie all the time. One day it was an unmarked minivan, the next a different minivan with big "Calgary Police Traffic Division" or something like that on the side. Both times in the median between the 14th St exit and John Laurie heading east. Hazards usually on when I see 'em.

in britain their units got TRASHED when they put the photo cameras up. enough damage was done in the first 3 months that any tickets the units wrote just covered the cost of the damages.

my V1 detector picks these idiots up from a mile away and i laugh my ass off when i give people brake check warnings, they still blow by me and speed by the vans, OR speed past me and then have to jam on their brakes when they realize what is going on and i just laugh my ass off at them.

photo radar is an absolute joke and purely a cash cow. it serves ZERO purpose in slowing drivers down.

What mode do you run your V1 on in the city? I like a big L (advanced logic mode) but I am worried it won't pick up the photo radar cause of the filtering.

i run mine on A. it picks up basically everything but it is really easy to do your own filtering and sort stuff out. anything on X band i disregard, and when around strip malls i know the thing is going to beep a lot. having the arrows and # of bogeys allows you to do a quick mental filter. i would much rather get too much info than not enough and get nabbed
