  • Help with Strep Throat!

Ok I just got strep throat for the first time and my throat feels super swollen and I can't even eat or swallow and water. Got some antibiotics but they just started kicking in a little (3rd day on medz).

Anyone got any secrets to sooth the throat or how to eat

    Thanks

    QuA - In Pain.

P.S. Got it from either this red head or whitey chick. Damn these girls.

          Bill Murray:

[Coughs] Doc, what could I do for this cough?

          RZA:
****, I was just thinking about that. Check this out: you get some hydrogen peroxide...

          Bill Murray:
We got that for cuts and stuff.

          RZA:
...take fifty percent hydrogen peroxide, fifty percent water. You gargle with it. Do *not* swallow, you spit it out. Don't swallow, Bill Murray.

          GZA:
And if that doesn't work, try oven cleaner.

The antibiotics will help quite a bit once they start kicking in. You may want to try just gargling with some strong mouthwash like listerine, as it may help temporarily ease the scratchiness so you can at least eat or drink something. feel better man!

              Re: Help with Strep Throat!

I got a nasty throat infection while I was going to SAIT a few years ago. Like you say, hurts to eat/swallow anything. I didn't eat or drink anything, and I mean anything, cause it hurt and I wasn't at all hungry for a few days. At that point I decided I needed something, so I got some Ensure meal replacement. Its nice and creamy and cool (keep it in the fridge), and has some decent flavors, although I seem to recall the chocolate tasted kinda funny. I lived off the stuff for about a week or so.

              Hope that helps

Does everyone get nasty throat infections at SAIT? lol.. My whole class was nailed with one in my second or third semester!

In response to the original post, ya there are a few things you can do:

1). As mentioned before, use a strong mouthwash and gargle with this 3-4 times a day. Dont swallow the stuff either. You may also try a salt water gargle solution as well.

2). As much as it hurts to swallow, ensure that you are getting proper fluids. 6-8 glasses of water per day when sick is a MINIMUM.

3). Experiment, a hot towel fresh out of the drying machine may help with some of the pain, keep it on your neck. Similarily, a cold pack may also help out.

4). Keeping your throat moist is a good suggestion, go out and purchase some lozenges. There is a certain brand "strepsil" which is OTC and that will provide a "numbing" effect. Keep in mind that these will not "solve" the problem, only "numb" it temporarily.

5). Keep your hands clean, this is how you will transmit this nasty bug to others. (well, other than making out with weird girls...)

Finally, with any infection the body will raise it's temperature to help fight the invaders. Keep a watch out for fever or anything else abnormal with heartbeat/etc...

I am not a doctor or anything, but I am a chronic health freak/worrier when it comes to health issues...

That was the best segment in that whole movie.

QuA: Strep sucks ass (as you are finding out). I find that Cepacol mint flavour lozenges help the most. The have benzocaine in them so they numb the **** out of your throat. Get well soon man.
