  • Need a new Digital Camera

I dont know a huge amount about cameras these days but my little 2.0mp kodak has been dropped a few to many times and been down a few waterslides in its career and needs to retire soon
    Hows this look
Not a bad price as its $279 at FS. Not big on HP but reviews ive seen look decent on it.
Oh plus theres a 30$ coupon available for it

I can't go through model by model, but I will say this - get a Canon, Nikon, or Olympus. Megapixels mean nothing if you're looking through a mega-crappy lens. PM me and I can get get you a list of models to check out, probably in the $300 range.

I would agree... go with one of the big names that make good lenses... Canon, Nikon, Olympus.... I am partial to Canon but thats just me. Here is a great site where you can do side by side comparisons and there are some user ratings as well as reviews for a lot of cameras.

You really should get a Canon or possibly a Nikon, there is a world of difference between the cameras made by camera companies and the ones made by electronics companies like HP, Sony, etc.

I totally agree, go with a brand such as Canon, Nikon or Olympus.
HP and Fuji make a low end camera...
You will not regret your decision by going to a better brand / lens...

Yes, Panasonic cameras use Leica lenses . . . VERY good stuff. Also, Sony uses Carl Zeiss optics - also quite good.

I'm a photojournalist and I use Canon stuff . . . always have. I hate to plug one company over another here, but look in the press area of any major event and it'll most likely be a sea of white Canon lenses

What do you shoot? I have 2 Canon 20D bodies with a whole bunch of L lenses and a couple primes. I tried out the 1D Mark II but couldn't justify the $5000 price tag so I bought some lenses instead. Nice camera though.

My wife and I shoot weddings and portraiture (just got some studio gear this year).

It's fully functional - you can override all auto functions at your discretion or just point and shoot. It takes CF cards, which are easy to find and often on sale. It's 4.0 megapixels at super fine setting, which means that you could buy a 256 or 512MB CF card and shoot all you want.

Ahhhh . . . interesting that two photogs from opposite ends of the country would drive the same year and same model car!

I shoot with a 1D MkII and a 20D. The 20D is a great camera image quality, but I'm always bumping that friggin' program dial on top while walking around. It makes me zany! It's good with long glass, given that it amplifies stadard focal length by a factor of 1.6 - the 1D on the other hand is a 1.3X jump over standard, making it ideal for wide stuff. I agree that the price of the MkII is prohibitively expensive, but the paper pays for my stuff now.

I just got hooked up with new Canon glass and strobes:
                            16-35 f/2.8
                            24-70 f/2.8
                            70-200 (non IS) f/2.8
1.4X converter (not special in any way)
                            2 x 580EX (much better than the 550's)

I use a pretty old set up for multi strobe work - just optical slaves on portable light stands (crappy stands too!). I hate the Canon infra-red wireless system. There's no consistency and I found out during a relatively important federal government presser that it wreaks havoc with microphones (and now Minister ***SCREEEAAAAOOOOOOUUUUUUWWWWWW****)

                              Nice Car...

I just got a set of Alien Bees for my studio strobes... so far I like them a lot. My only beef is that the modelling lamps are pretty weak. But for the price... you can't lose, good customer service too.

I have never bumped my command dial by accident... I love the ability to select the focusing point with the joystick thingy.

                              My setup includes:

                              2x20D
Elan 7E with grip (film backup or for B&W)
2x550EX (wish I hadn't bought them before the 580EX came out)
EF-S 10-22 f/3.5-4.5 (allows me to shoot super wide on the 20D... love the lens)
                              EF 17-40 f/4L
EF 24-70 f/2.8L (don't leave home without it. Heavy but worth every penny)
                              EF 70-200 f/4L
EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS (with the 20D and teleconverter almost 900mm!!! manual focus though)
                              EF 25 extension tube
                              EF 1.4X teleconverter
                              EF 50 f/1.8
                              EF 85 f/1.8

I have to have a real job to pay for my gear... I wish I could shoot for a living. What paper do you work for?
