  • Considering the Dark Side

Well I am selling my car and moving to something quicker. I have considered a bunch of options. But the one car that is sticking out right now is a used RSX type s. It looks really impressive, I am reluctant to leave VW, but it might happen.

Quick, talk me out of this lol, or maybe into it. Anyone have any experience with these things?

RSX Type S's are not bad. Depends on the price you can get it for.

I/H/E + Hondata is pretty impressive.

    No torque for those rsx's.

        Re: Considering the Dark Side

What about the RSX do you find impressive?

A 1.8t will keep right up to it in all aspects of performance, a chipped 1.8t will walk all over it, and you would need many thousands of dollars worth of mods for it to catch up to a 1.8t.

Gas mileage is similar, resale % is similar. You don't need to rev a 1.8t in to the stratosphere to get some power out of it.

If you are an all motor rev lover, or you like the looks better I could see the allure but other than that I can't see any advantage.

        RSX's get stolen more too.

I'm pro 1.8T of coz but im just saying their cars are cheap to mod too.

Hondata #4 + CAI actually post 190-200whp #'s however torque is where you get screwed around 140wtq. Or Kpro which is free so basically just a CAI cost =)

Power to weight ratio is pretty darn good for 2 mods in the type s.

Low end torque just rox on the 1.8T, Neon's right, you better love revvin' the rsx to get speed =)

              Re: Considering the Dark Side

I drove a brand new RSX Type-S a few weeks ago, and to be honest, I was left very unimpressed with the performance. You need to wind it up to about 7000 RPM for the Vtec to kick in (the only time there is any real acceleration) and whenever you do, it sounds/feels as though the car is going to explode.

At any rate, it's not my cup of tea. I would look into something like an A3 (if money's not an issue).

              Hope that helps!

                  Re: Considering the Dark Side

I'm not religious VW, but if you're really upgrading just for speed, an RSX isn't it.

Some better options: Wait a year for mk5 2.0T GTI with a DSG.

Or an STI, Legacy GT, Neon SRT, any Mustang, perhaps the Mazdaspeed 6 - at least those will all be noticable. Or just buy a bike and really feel the speed.

                    Re: Considering the Dark Side

I also drove a type S prior to buying my 20th. I thought it was a decent car however didn't like the power at all. I'm not a fan of the I-vtec. I'd driven a few preludes and celica GTS's and found that when you hit 6500 rpm, it was like hitting a NOS button (not that I know what thats like). It really screamed! With the new I-Vtec, the power is more linear however doesn't come on as hard as they used to. For me, there is not comparison in terms of everyday drivability and fun in favor of the 1.8T. All that coming from a VR fan! My 2 cents!!

Not entirely true. A chipped 1.8T will beat a stock RSX type-s but a modded one is another story. The Type-S responds very well to mods, especially the hondata ECU flash. There are guys getting around 200whp with intake, header, exhaust and hondata. Thats enough to beat most bolt-on/chipped 1.8Ts, considering the RSX will have a weight advantage as well. I have a buddy that has a Type-S (stock right now) and I can pull on him pretty good, but I've run a Type-S with intake, exhaust and hondata (at the track of course ) and he was able to pull away from me once the speeds got well into the triple digits. However, this was when I just had Revo stage 1 and an intake, now with stage 2 and my downpipe I think I might take him, seeing as how my top end is MUCH improved.

Anyhow, I think the Type-S is a very nice car for the money. Yes they arent hugely exciting stock as far as stright line performance, but they are very avid handlers and as I mentioned, can be made quite fast for minimal $$$.

Price difference is why I bought a VW to tell the truth, a loaded RSX-S was wayyyy more money.

Certainly they can be made fast, however the cost involved is huge in comparison. An I/H/E/C will run you 2 grand in parts alone, whereas a chip and a downpipe could be had for a grand. Add on a $150 DV/BOV and you get the ricey PSSSSSSH when you come off throttle.

An stock RSX will outhandle a stock GTI any day of the week.

The new RSX-type S' have very nice gearbox's and above average suspension, but beyond that Dub's are way better!
