  • The Cobalts are out.......

Ahhh, another step back for us! Now the Chevy Cobalt SS is available, and beginning to show up on the streets of Calgary....I find this car to be in between the SRT-4 and us 1.8t's.....Rated at 205hp/200ftlbs tq, it has the 2.0l ecotec motor with a roots style blower on it squeezing 12lbs of boost.....judging from the underhood pics, it looks mean, the S/C is HUGE....It also has an air/water intercooler, as well some will be available with an LSD and Recaros (similar to the Ion Redline). On Beyond, someone posted up a dyno of 217hp.....The car weighs similar to ours, at about 3000lbs...on the plus side, it does have the dated rear beam suspension like ours, so there will be no out handling involved here.....So, once again, we are the bastard child, I really wish VW would roll out the 2.0t FSI GTI right about yesterday.....

Edmunds review (pics of car and engine on the page aswell):

Bottom line: It's still a late model chevy. And not a very attractive one at that.

EDIT: what I am trying to say is that I would drive a 2.slow over a Cobalt SS any day.

As far as I'm concerned its still a Cavalier... I used to own a Camaro so I'll give a Chev respect when its due, but having sat in a Cobalt, I'm pretty unimpressed. Moreover, I think that the Cobalt, like all Chevs is plauged by the plastic interior that has somehow always seemed fashionable in domestics for whatever cost saving reasons they may have.

Having gone from a 5.7L V8 to a 1.8T, I must say that the switch kind of drove home the point that muscle isn't everything (and for the record, the Cobalt SS is not a muscle car and doesn't deserve the coveted SS badge). The GTI is more refined, more precise, and more of a true driver's car, its a German and I like to believe that it is much more purpose built with the driver and the GTI history in mind. Whereas the Cobalt SS, Ion Redline, SRT-4, etc, are cars that are quick, but don't share the attention to detail given to our autos and are simply the sum of GM/Dodge parts from the corporate parts bin.

Besides, there are plenty of chipped/modded Golfs and GTIs out there and in here waiting for overzealous factory Cobalts and Redlines owners so we can remind them who started this whole market in the first place.

The ecotec engine is actually an awesome engine. Its super light-weight and very strong. You can actually order a 2.0L FI ecotec race engine for swapping into your GM car now! Plus GM has an open policy for knowledge sharing, you can basically find out anything about it (unlike VW).

In a couple years you will be able to pick up ecotec's extremely cheap and build them for FI applications... will be all over the sport compact racing scene.

Hmmm, I might have to change my sig soon LOL

It's funny how SOOOO many people in Calgary own Cavaliers and Sunfires. If I had a dollar for every chick or hoser in a Cavalier with a Roxy sticker there, I'd be rich. Here in Cali, Cavaliers and Sunfires are rarely seen..... I love it I saw one on the freeway the other week, and when it pulled passed me, it had Saskatchewan plates on it! LOL I can never get away from those God aweful cars

                Re: The Cobalts are out.......

an interesting factoid. When I went to the automall a few weeks ago I went into the Saab/Saturn Dealership to show my friend how crazy those Recaros are in the Redline (they are sweet!). Anyway, I found out that the redline is actually using the SAAB powerplant but instead of a turbo they put on the supercharger (probably to distance it from it's roots).

I'm sure the Cobalt and the Redline are identical as the cobalt and (whatever the other one is) share the redline platform.

I don't really like Chevy cars, mostly for the interior and cheap feel, but honestly, they've locked in to a market segment that they will likely do well in, cheap fast cars. It's funny how the domestics are starting to take over the "tuner" or "race boy" market that they were once shunned from. I mean, why buy a honda with 115hp -160hp when you can buy a Chevy or Dodge for 5 grand less with 50, 60 or even 70 more horsepower that is way more fun to tinker with (turbos, superchargers, LSD right from the factory).

The only way most cars will compete with these is with substantial investment. But, like was said before, they are not really Refined, mostly just stuff thrown together to make them fast.

Seeing cobalts and neons with higher numbers then mine make me sad.
