  • Chipping your VW

Ok I have read all your posts about chipping your VW. Is this only for the Diesel VW'S? Or can you do this to all the VW's? What are the benefits of doing this? What are typical costs for doing it?

You can chip any VW, the benefits are different depending on the engine I think. The downside, of which I am wary, is that you void your VW warranty as it pertains to the engine.

I think, and everybody should feel free to correct me here, as I am a VW newbie too, that with the 2.0 you get a negligible horsepower gain (maybe 15 hp, although it's early, I'm sleepy and something in my brain says it might be 30 hp) and some increased torque.

If you want one, Simon can hook you up (including a sweet discount for NewVeeDub members).

I'll be chipping my car the day the warranty expires. I'd do it sooner if I were handy enough to make up for not being able to drive into the dealership and just say "fix it." Except that I notice on Simon's site the info claims the chip is undetectable to dealer's diagnostic equipment. If that's true I want me one of them right about nowish.

      Re: Chipping your VW

Any engine run with an ECU can be modified in some way to increase power.....With VW's, this can be done to all of them, 2.0 to TDI.....there is a small increase with the 2.0, not sure if its noticeable or not, same with the VR6...this is due to them being N/A rather than turbo'd...The 1.8t on the other hand is where its at for chipping, with increases of 20-30hp/40-50tq, all because if increased boost and fuel/timing mapping....About warranty, its negligable if the warranty becomes void....with warranty, in order to deny it, the modification has to be proven to be the cause of the malfunction....so for example, if you're chipped and your window regulator goes bad, they can't say no to the repair.....but if you're chipped and you throw a rod in the engine, they could possibly prove it was due to the increased stress of the power output (unlikely on a N/A vehicle)....I think the majority of us on here are chipped, and have had few problems with warranty issues.....And about the undetectable part, the dealership couldn't see mine, but my OEM software appeared out of date, and when its reflashed, it's back to your chip dealer to get re-done (usually free of charge)

        I have a 24v VR6, and the chip only got me 5 WHP/WTQ.

Edit. reliable sources tell me that with the new tablets/software they are using ALL chips are now detectable.

Same with me... I guess it all depends on the tech you get, and what kind of mood he is in that day. That is reason #1 why my car always goes to the same guy.

At the risk of sounding asinine and repetitive because I know this has been discussed over and over again, what are people's preferences on chips/programs? I'm getting my 1.8T chipped in the next couple weeks and I'm considering GIAC, APR or Upsolute. I've done some research and it seems the pwoer gains are fairly consistent between most chips, but are there any huge pros or cons to any of these that stand out for you guys?

I heartily agree. The N75x and MBC diddling is a huge expense for very little gain and many more 'issues'. Your money is better spent toward other mods after your chip (i.e. downpipe).

BTW: I have 3 N75's and an MBC or two sitting around here if someone wants to buy em.

Chip vendors are also generally irrelevant. Revo, GIAC, APR, UP are all very similar to each other. Start considering them by the following: local availability, price, tuneability.

Turbomedic - when you were reflashed at the dealership, did this show up on your work order or bill/receipt?

How frequently are the dealerships reflashing the ECU? I'm asking as my car definitely doesn't feel as powerful as it did when Simon chipped it (TDI), but how could you tell its not another issue (MAF, intake clogging, etc.) unless the dealer told you they reflashed?

If your issue is caused by the chipping, yes.
