  • Going to Hawa-ii

Hey guys, as some of you know i'm getting married, in 10 days to be exact and well, I'm going to Maui for post wedding relaxation. I've never been there and I was thinking, it is a tropical place, it has rain forests. Then I started thinking back to that spider post a while ago and was wondering, is there anything there that will sting, bite, claw, poison, kill me? I'm not super paranoid or anything but thought before I go bounding through rainforest looking for lost temples I should maybe think about that. Someone told me they have Hobo spiders there but I know little else.

Anyway I figure a few of you have probably been there and some of you are bug experts so I thought I'd ask.

If I were you, I would wear tinfoil under my clothes.

Haha, yea I know, I go bounding through the forests on my mountain bike knowing there are Grizzlies and cougars and whatnot. But I just thought I'd check. I'm not sure about the tinfoil idea, i think it would be a bit embarrasing considering the noise factor, it would make it hard getting in and out of the Jeep.

        P.S. Spiders are gross.

                Re: Going to Hawa-ii

I dont think that there are too many medically important spiders on the Hawaiin islands due to them being islands. The hobo spider landed in north america in the Seattle area, and has been extending its range from there so I doubt it has made it to Hawaii. It has only been confirmed in Alberta twice.

They may have black widows, but they are not too much to worry about. You are more likely to encounter one in your grapes bought at a Calgary supermarket. I get 2 or 3 live ones a year via this route. You should see the spider I got today off a shipment of bananas.

Keep this in mind, there were more people killed by each of the following last year in North America, lawnmowers, lightning and sex induced heart attacks than were killed by spiders.

Also, there are no native snakes in Hawaii, so I doubt there are many poisonous ones out there.

Dont worry & enjoy your trip and married life.
