    Re: Bittorrent Advice

haha Platinum! Thats your damn problem! I live just outside the city so I am forced to go with them to get any kind of "high speed" internet..They Suck!

Anyways, I dont think you need to disable static to get port forwarding to work, I know the only hardcoded IP I have is on my server and I can use BT on any of my machines. If it is static however, you should be able to set the IP as whatever you want really..Just so you know, you can't have a true static IP because regardless of what you do, Platinum still uses DHCP.

Also, I dont think you need to do anything in the OS to get this to go, just the routing. I dont have your pic in front of me, but try type this in:

app name: Start End IP Enable
    blahblah 6881 6889 192.168.1.* Yup

where * is the IP of the machine you intend on downloading to
    (to find out, start->run->(type)cmd->(type)ipconfig)

Hey Ryan - I assume your on shaw talkin about newsgroups? A couple (3 actally) guys at work are ex-shaw employees and they can get the backend opened up for newsgroups if you talk to em real nice..My boss got them to do it and hes pulled off newsgroups at just under 5mbps..its unreal, Ive got screenshots to prove it

Alright..... I'll stop being annoying now! I realized that when I altered my Router settings, I got my IP address wrong. Yes I know... I'm an idiot. It's moving at about 9KB/s now, which is alot better than before.

Thanks for putting up with my garbage questions guys

haha, no problem buddy - and to be honest with you, you wont see anywhere near 50kb on platinum 95% of the time..I think I MAY have broken 100 once in the 500+gb Ive downloaded with them..if you can keep a steady DL of 9k without up'ing at like..35 (happens to me ALL the time) be happy!

Oh! Also, watch your ass with platinum, those money grubbin' bastards! They will start to charge you for going over your monthly alloted b/w Im not exactly sure what the limit is, but I have to pay extra every single month.

Does anyone have a prefered client for Bittorrent?

I have not played around with it, as I have always found what I need via the newsgroups with Grabbit.

Where does someone find Bittorrent links?

Azereus rocks all for a BT client.

                            http://azureus.sourceforge.net/

I've used them all and Azereus is by far the most stable, useful, lightweight, and aggressive client out there.

Shaw regularly calls me to ***** and complain about my bandwidth use. I got bumped to a higher package when I pounded 250 gig in a week and a half. Giggidy Giggidy.

For torrents you can also try www.torrentreactor.net

If you are a linksys BEF series you will find the port forwarding under the 'advanced routing' or some such.

I have my wireless router set with forwarded ports (can't remember the ranges....), and a static IP addy, I can download basically at whatever rate my modem will bring it in.....With my Mozilla DL manager I've hit upwards of 800-900K/sec.....Bit torrent I'll rarely see go over 150K/sec.....I use Burst for my torrent DL'er
