    I gotta say that I really like the Smart , far more than the Echo. I get a smile on my face whenever I see one on the streets. As far as safety, I think that they are very safe due to the way that the body incorporates the frame.

    If you look in the Sun from time to time they have an ad with a picture of a Smart going head on with a luxury sedan, and the Smart looks like it got the better of the deal.

    I think they would be brilliant as a second car.

      Re Echo hatch vs. Smart; I still say smart, however I no longer find the echo hatch uggo... not a bad looking car. For a Japanese car it is probably more euro than most of the rides on this site.

          I wouldn't buy a fortwo if my life depended on it....I see one and it makes me shudder that any single person would cart a loved one around in it...I have seen some horrid things come from what would seem safe vehicles...I dread the day I come to an MVA with one of these.....fortwo= bad choice......there's a reason vehicles are still relatively large, its a safety issue....I guess at what point would you compromise safety for mileage?? Buy a Honda hybrid....

              As I would......but seeing how this whole discussion focussed around vehicles other than VW's, and including "smart/hybrid" cars, I couldn't include that.....

                    Well I feel a Smart is a safe choice and after driving one I think a lot of peoples opinions would change. The tridon safety cell is an amazing design and really puts occupant saftey at the forefront. The design has more in common with a Formula 1 saftey cell than a regular car. The vehicle also uses struts and wheels to help shield, absorb and transfer vehicle impact.

                    I personally feel the whole notion of being in a larger vehicle makes you instantly safer is a bit of a cop out and that we should try and get away from that. The Smart has preformed well in Europe for many years now and I think it will be fine here and I am not afraid to drive one. My fear is just a bad driver in an H2 but hell that can hurt you in any car and they dont seem to hold up so well in crash tests either.

                      After seeing some of the crash tests and the crash demo comparison on 5th Gear, I'd feel safer in a smart car than an older Ford F150 or Ranger. All that matters is shock absorbtion and, while small, the body does enough. If you do hit something hard enough to crush the frame, you're organs are probably already paste.

                        Ya, Ive seen the head on collision tests and all that, but it doesnt show a smartcar getting rear ended by a dodge ram 3500 or a smartcar rear ending a ford F350..Getting T-Boned in anything is going to suck, but...
                        comes to mind when I think of getting T-Boned in a smartcar.


                        Oh, and blair, I totally agree that a smartcar is no less practical than a Hummer but from a safety standpoint you can't compare the 2. This doesnt have to do with being bigger, if the smartcar weighed 5000lb I wouldnt argue it, but those smartcars are lighter than a '92 eagle summit

                        edit: The smartcars do fine in europe because thats what they were designed for, big city, high population driving where parking and affordability are key. Here, where we pay 1/3 what they pay for gas, have huge freeways and acres of parking it just doesnt seem right....and would you really want to drive to edmonton in that thing? lol a good gust of wind and so long
