I upgraded to a 2.4 p4 but am still squeaking by with an overclocked 4200 TI. Doom3 is pretty good if you play at night, alone, in the dark with a good 5.1 system (or headphones). Far Cry was brilliant until about the last quarter - then it got stupid.

I will hold off until HL2 and then pay the piper for a new card. :(

FYI my p4 2.4, gig dual chan ram, 4 80G in raid 5, GF4 4200 only can muster 16.5 fps in 1024x768. 27.2 at 640x480 but it looks worse than quake2. I'm playing 800x600, medium with AA off for a whopping 24 fps. I can totally feel it.

If you want to test yours, do a ctrl alt ~ and then type "timedemo demo1". It looks a lot choppier than it is during the test though.

damn geoff your computer crazy like me.. i've yet to do a benchmark on doom 3.. right now i run 1024x768 at highest setting and it plays smooth no idea on the fps though i'll bench it tonight if i have time

oh yea playing at night rules for that game..

As far as harddrives go, Ive got a SCSI controller on a different p4 2.8 with 3 73gb 15k drives (thanks again work) and I have been thinking about moving that raid set to my main PC for some better game speeds although it would uglify my pretty case

3dmark is a good tool yea.. i'm really wanting to build a new computer but i just did my new server and i'm waiting on new technologies to hit..

but if you want to drool.. check out the new alienware area 51.. intel 925 based, p4 3.6 HT 1mb cache or 3.4 with 2mb cache, dual ddr2 memory, sata or scsi or whatever you want, x800xt plat or 6800 ultra pci-express based.. whatever ram.. i made one yesterday with no monitor and it came to 4200US!! hahahaha

haha Yeah, I built 2 brand new machines in march and it cost me about 3200 (ones more of a server + the hdd's were free haha, other is gamer) but I wont touch another computer part until the have the PCIexpress motherboards out (out now, but not readily avail.), and I probably wont even buy that until intel releases a 64bit processor, thats gonna slay AMD

/biased Intel fan - Im running a 1.4 and a 2.5ghz AMD and the 2.5 is on its 3rd mobo, the 1.4 is unstable as f**k..and Im using strictly Antec cases so its not the ps frying that isht

Speaking of Alienware, a buddy of mine bought a laptop from them awhile ago (some "special gamers model" or some crap) and it was like 3400USD...that is so friggin ridiclous to pay, I can't believe those guys stay in biz!

haha look at local voodoo though they've been around for a long time now and they were the original hardcore systems

as for my PCs my desktops use g'd up lian-li cases with 500+w enermax PS's
and my servers use antec cases cuz they are killer designs and affordable.

Yeah, I use a Lanboy for my main and..I forget the name, but its a lanboy minus the clear window and blue LED fans..Works out pretty good. The case I really wanted for my server was a Lian-Li but it was like $250 w/o a PS so..Antec it was :P

haha yea its hard to bite the bullet on those lian-lis.. i bought mine 1.5 years ago when they were really expensive.. it was 280 for the case adn then like 150 or something for the biggy PS.. i shoulda bought a car mod instead lol

haha, Your telling me! Like I said, I spent 3200 on puter parts a month before I bought my car Makes me regret it as I have about 6 computers sitting in my basement, coulda had rims + suspension by now had I saved that cash
