I was going to put up some clips from our cruise, but the size of each clip is huge. I messed around on premiere, and a 9 minute video is over 2GB's. How can I make the files smaller.. or compress them somehow?

Re: video compression?
Change the output size to 320x240, change the video codec from raw to Microsoft avi or whatever and use trial and error to find which one you like. I usually export into SVCD format then use the Microsoft Encoder to make a wmv file. Make sure you change the audio from raw to mp3 or something as well.

Re: video compression?
Why use AVI or MWV? They are ass-like codecs. QuickTime is the industry standard from what I understand, and it's cross platform.
Just my $0.02.
Edit: ... and yes, if you want to edit a video later, keep all of the uncompressed DV streams so you can make the best quality video. (or at least the original tapes)Last edited by Billip; 06-17-2004, 11:19 AM.billip

Re: video compression?
Ok I'm a little lost..... not a techie guy here. I took the nine minute movie I messed around with in premiere, and exported it as a movie. But it's over 2 GB's. In other words.... how do I compress the audio to Mp3 and the video to whatever format to make the file size smaller?
OH btw Bill... as the local camera expert... are there any lens covers I can get for the video camera. I'm a little weary of rocks and stuff as I have the camera hanging out the window.
ThanksSidewalks are for normal walkin.... aint no room for fancy walkin....

Thanks
Just look at the end of the lens on your camera and see if it has threads to screw in filters. They usually say the size on them if they do (ie: "52mm" or "58mm" or whatever size it is).
And I can't help much with the compression stuff because I've never had to compress my video for anything... I just output to DV stream... but QuickTime rules the school!

Re: video compression?
Quicktime (Sorenson3 compression) used to be king, and since most Apples didn't run Media player very well, it was standard. But since quicktime 5, it's been buggier than any MS product on Windows machines, and Media Player is stable on most Apples. And the Microsoft mpeg4 compression kicks ass over anything you'll get with premiere/quicktime pro. You need ANOTHER product called Media Cleaner Pro to get a quicktime file down to compete with an MS file.
Anyways - when you go to export a movie after editing it, there's a pull down menu with all sorts of options. You can deinterlace or reinterlace, you can change the video codec/audio codecs, you can manually set keyframes - it's all when you export (at least in Premiere 6.5). Check project properties, but I'm positive it has to be in the Export/Make Movie options.

Re: video compression?
Thanks for the help guys... I spent some time messing around with it this afternoon, and figured it out.
Now the question..... should I bother posting some clips, or should it be an end of the year suprise?Last edited by liquid; 06-18-2004, 12:16 AM.Sidewalks are for normal walkin.... aint no room for fancy walkin....
