  • Anyone know the rules behind buying US cars?

Hey all, my friend is looking at a few cars for sale. One that interested him a little was a '96 integra. I'm not sure on all the details of it or how it made it here but it was originally a US car. I was always told that a vehicle had to be 15 years or older, or is that just for vehicles not offered in Canada? Any thoughts on it would be great.

As far as I can remember if the same car was available in Canada then it is a pretty simple process, I think all that occurs is you have to pay GST when you bring it in to the country.

I THINK Blair is right.... the 15yr limit is only for cars that are considered "collector" cars, and were not originally spec for Canada. For cars like the integra I think it's a simple matter of paying GST, and maybe getting it inspected in the province.

Yes, there is a list of all permissable cars that can and cannot be brought in and what modifications are needed (if any) for each car to pass the safety standards. If you are on the list, you can bring in the car and insure it in canada.

Oh ok, that makes sense, and actually I'm fairly sure the car has already been registered here so he shouldn't even have to pay GST.

          thanks.

My brother in law bought a Caprice from Montana (I think) off Ebay - had to pay duty and some tax, and then had to have a DRL kit put in and get an inspection. That's about it.
