I just got a $247 speeding ticket coming into work today. Doing a 118 in a 80. Im pretty much screwed so I dont know how im gonna fight this one =) I guess im going through pointts =)

38 over is a fair bit, I am suprised that its only $247!

You can talk to the crown prosecutor, I went and he was a pretty nice guy... he has to deal with some real a$$holes all day long, so if you are polite he is probably willing to cut you a deal. I doubt the deal will be "go home scott-free" but I am sure you can get it reduced. In my case, I was guilty so I didn't mind paying the full fine, but I didn't want my insurance to go up and wanted to keep my record clean... so thats what I told him, I didn't have to make up lies or anything like that.

Or, you can go to court yourself, or use Points. I don't know much about Points... I have heard both good and bad stories.

If you go yourself (or even if you use Points), I would say the first thing you need to do is go down to the court and get the date moved to some other day... I think you can do this immediately. It highly increases the chances that the officer will not be able to make it!!

Kor wicked advice! Im gonna go through pointts. I think they charge quite a bit but still not as much as $247. I just dont want any demerits.

Points is a lot - it's more for DUIs and 50+ speeding ticket and especially reckless or careless driving tickets, and stunting tickets. Unless you are on the line to be suspended, either fight the ticket yourself or pay it. If you talk to the crown they will probably make it a multinova ticket and you can just pay the fine. It's the money they are after.

You might be able to talk to the Prosecutor and if you don't like what he says, go to Points (they are just down the hall). You don't have to wait for your court date to see the prosecutor-guy.

I was pretty sure Points charged much more than the fine.... I would only go through them if it was (as Khyron says) a big-deal ticket. But, they do have more experience. A while back, (last year?) one of the guys on beyond.ca knew someone at Points or something and had a way to get money off their fee? I can't really remember.

as for the subject farking pigs were all over the place coming into DT at around 11am i guess i'll drive nice back home for lunch

I don't think he can negotiate 38 over into a photo radar charge though. But, you may be able to get him to call it an equipment failure (speedo was off etc) or just give you half the points... unless there is an error or something on the ticket sheet, or if you had a passenger along with you who is willing to also testify that you were not speeding or were not speeding to that degree...

you go to the place where you can pay the ticket and you get in the one line to talk to a justice of the peace.. they look at the ticket.. you say i'm sorry i don't ever speed but i was late for work and I have no problem paying the fine I just don't want any demerits against my insurance.. if they agree you'll go to another line to talk to a real judge.. the judge basically says as soon as you get into their office.. 'you'll pay the fine?' .. yuppers okay they stamp it with some code to give no points and you pay your fine..

I heard that is true only if its 20 over though

...but I might be wrong...

I know that there were some people ahead of me in line last time, and they definitely didn't leave happy. But I have no idea what their offence was, maybe they ran over children in a school zone...

i dunno kris mine was 23 over and 140bucks they just let me pay.. there were crazies there with like 5 tickets! doing the same thing just paying them with no points off.. the govt really doesn't care about the points aslong as they get their money.. my buddies at work have done it a ton too.. aslong as you are polite and calm you'll get treated nice..
worst case scenario if the judge won't let you get no points they will lower it for you.

Yeah, you don't actually have to go all the way downtown to argue those tickets too..I can't recall the name right now but will find out. A buddy who has a serious problem with the law (hes had about 15 tickets in the last couple years) fights every one he gets there and has never got demerits taken off. Usually they cut the fine as well (although I dont think his truck could do 38 over in most cases). Aparently the guys at this other place don't give 2 sh*ts

The correct way to handle this is to plead guilty to the offence and agree to pay the fine only as the "Registered Owner" of the vehicle....it is then treated the same as if it were a multinova ticket... you just pay the entire amount but no drivers licence penalties (demerits) are involved .... just a fine against the registered owner....

have fought a few tickets this way.... so has my father... and other friends that I told about this...
