I am going to Amsterdam in August... I can hardly wait. Anybody here ever been? what can I expect?
Do drink the absynth.....and yes, the plazas and street performers are awesome.....don't just stop in amstardam though, look around, rotterdam, etc.....really nice architecture......Ride the canals in amsterdam though, they are cool.....I'm from Holland, so I've been a few times in that area.....
I was there last May - the coffee bars are fun, yes the pot is on the menus.
Don't take pics of the hookers in the windows. Big pimps are nearby. It's 50US per person to even walk in the room so don't bother unless you $$$.
Don't see a live sex show with your wife, no-one does that there, no one at all....
Rent a bike, never take taxi - trains and busses go everywhere. Hot chicks in mini skirts on bikes using cell phones is funny. Lots of cool cars to take pics of.
I was just in Amsterdam and I dont think they have that McRib anymore .. i could be mistaken but i rember looking to see if the menu was the same .. but they do have tripple chesseburgers.
Amsterdam is always a good time, and i am sure i will be back soon. The pushers and beggers do get a bit tiresome on the street around the redlight district. And do not ever buy drugs from the people on the street. The reason the police have not arrested them as they do not have drugs on them, they will just rob you. If you get bored go into one of the greenhouses and look for celebrities pictures on the wall to see who is a stonner.
There are some really nice buildings, the Vangoh musem, and anne franks house to check out also ..
The last thing you should be doing in amsterdam is going to mc-dicks, i mean, get real.
If you can catch a bus tour to volendam (usually include a cheese factiry and the windmill village) its definitely worth the trip.
The cheese market in amsterdam is amazing
the van gogh museum and the anne frank house are good
DO NOT go to the amsterdam experience? holland experience? its an imax show where the seats move and they blow fish smell into the theatre to make it realistic - really sucked
Amsterdam is just a very free and open city, just hang out and you'll have a great time. Try to get out to some smaller places as well. You'll find villages that havent changed in hundreds of years, there are some castles and tours that get you places quick and back for some fun in the evening.
The world has but three sports, Bullfighting, Mountain Climbing, and Motor Racing. All the rest are merely games - Ernest Hemingway.
You guy's have covered pretty much all the basics. The Heineken brewery tour is a must. Equivelent of a couple CDN bucks, and after the tour you have an hour to drink all the Heiny you can. That is unless it has changed since.
