  • Mid size euro suv comparison

Hey gang, I am considering selling the avant and getting something a bit big that also has some towing capacity.
I am looking to spend around the 15-20k range. Looking at the Q7, Touareg and Cayenne. Any thoughts on any of these suv's? My wife has the Q5 and we love it, but I want something a bit bigger, ability to tow a boat is nice too. All opinions, comments, concerns welcome!

My parents have a 3.0t sport q7. Pulls a boat well. Our old 3.2 q7 struggled at times on the way to Kelowna.

But tons of room in it, and an amazing ride. Great features etc.

Maybe go for a q7 tdi?

get a bluetec, or any bag 3.0tdi. Bmw diesels are nice too but they ride stiffer than a mk1 on welded struts.

tdi anything would be awesome, them seem to fetch a premium still though.

I've been thinking about one of those cayanne gts to replace my ram 1500 in the next few years.

Coincidence that only today I was looking at GTSs on Kijiji to import down here with the dollar being how it is. I had no idea a manual option even existed! Unbelievable... I'd imagine the clutch replacement is a $$$$ job.

We were looking for a sporty driving (ie. quick), good handling, practical, premium 5-seater earlier this year. Fuel mileage and towing capacity were not even a consideration. As such, we narrowed it down to 3 vehicles in the end: Mercedes ML63 AMG, Cayenne GTS, BMW X5M. The Merc was certainly cushy however... it felt too much luxury tourer (ie. soft) for me. Definitely a nice place to be and plenty of room... but too old man for this old man's tastes. Next up was the Cayenne which makes lovely sounds and handles like a dream. I really wanted the GTS from the start however, I just couldn't get over how small it really was. Many a test drive I would come home, open up the trunk on the RS4 and say to myself... I think we can carry more in this sedan than in the Cayenne. As such, the winner for us was the X5M. Although not as much a canyon carver as the Porsche, it's not far off and is miles more fun to drive than the Merc. It can also haul an actual family (ie. 2 adults, 2 kids, 2 dogs + stuff) around. The fact that it essentially tied the RS4 at 3:11 during C&D's Lightning Lap competition was the icing on the cake. Have owned ours for about 6 or 7 months now and couldn't be happier.

As such... and if it were my vote... I'd say Cayenne if towing capacity requirements are minimal, fun-to-drive requirements are high and you only need something a "bit?" bigger. With that said... I'm not sure how much bigger the Cayenne would be vs your Avant? Failing that, it's probably between the Q7 and Touareg if you're staying VAG. Obviously, keeping under a $20K budget will mean that age, mileage and options will come in to play so I'm thinking the Touareg would be the way to go as it'll be a couple years newer with more tech unless you want to have another Audi in your stable?
