  • temporary driving permit for transporting a car to the US?

    Hi guys,

I was wondering if anyone had any experience with acquiring a Alberta driving permit for a US citizen. I have someone who is going to be driving my car from Alberta to Los angles and so they need some sort of driving permit since they cannot register the car here. Is there such thing available? can they get an alberta temp plate/permit and use it to get the car across the border?

    Thanks in advance!

That should be their problem. I dont think theres anything to do with Alberta registries on their end.

As far as I know they can simply talk to the registry in their home city and either get a plate or a permit for the car in advance. They may need some paperwork from you.

You could call a Las Vegas DMV/registry and ask on the phone maybe?

I have only done this bringing cars INTO Alberta. I just go to the registry and get the permit, or call them and have them fax it to me once I've proved ownership / insurance.

he should be able to go into any registry in LA and get a temp tag to drive it back.. that's how I've done it with out of province cars I'm only assuming it would be the same process.. once the car is in LA safe and sound he will have to go through all the inspections to get a permanent tag.

He was saying something about how border checks might give him trouble for having a cali plate/permit for a Canadian car.

the other issue is that we are signing the bill of sale once he gets here on Saturday, for now all i have is a deposit so i cant even send him any legitimate documentation for him to use as a bill of sale.

I'm pretty sure they'd go to an Alberta registry the same way we would, but request a temporary tag to get them home. It'll likely be valid for 1-2 months. I'd call a registry and find out if that's a thing.

Adding the following info. from a quick Google search which brought up this site: http://www.ezbordercrossing.com/the-.../#.WCEbgTtlmCU

Buying the Car You Want To Import
              - When you pay for your vehicle you want a bill of sale with the VIN# showing you and/or a spouse as owner of vehicle. You also want the Manufacturer’s Statement/Certificate of Origin, and the vehicle title.
              - You should obtain a temporary license plate / insurance card from the Canadian Province in which you are buying the vehicle – even if you extended your U.S. insurance to cover the it.
              - You will also pay GST but you should not have to pay PST as a non-resident of the province.
              - You should absolutely check out the vehicle history using a service such as VinAudit.com before making any purchase. This report will show you the history of the car, including any accidents serious enough to block entry or require additional testing.

I've had two experiences of doing an importation in reverse from the US.
              1. went to a registry/city hall in Montana and got a temporary paper tag.
              2. kept the existing Washington State license on the car until I got home and simply had the vehicle insured.

                Sweet thanks for the info!

So the seller let you keep the license plate? wouldnt that be against the law or something? and if anything happens on the road he would be responsible since its his old plate?

He should just need insurance, in transit paper and the bill of sale.

Not sure what the big deal is.

Can't remember where I got the info. but that was just the process when buying a car from Washington. I even got pulled over by highway patrol on the way home for not having a front plate now and all was good

Good luck with the sale! It's a shame it's not sticking around here. :(

I recall when bringing a US car into Canada, all the paperwork including Bill of Sale needed to be sent to Canada customs 72 hours before I showed up with the car. You couldn't just drive up to the border with a bill of sale and expect to be let into the country. Not sure if it works the same going the other way but it would be worth investigating.

yea ive heard similar experiences which is why i wanted to get some more insight.

so far though, all i have found is that the buyer needs to show a bill of sale and proof of insurance. The other thing i heard was that the car needs to have US emissions stickers. luckily this being a US spec car originally, that shouldn't be an issue i would think.
