  • Tesla

A couple of weeks back a colleague of mine brought in a family members Tesla SUV.
Rear gull wing doors. The centre console was a giant touch screen. It was amazing to see how it actually worked and you could control everything. The pickup is insane... Its soooo FAST. The only thing that was missing was a flux capacitor...
The car could drive itself, it could overtake all by itself (you just press the signal indicator and the car does the rest). Talking about is one thing, but riding inside whilst it overtook a car on Stoney Trail is an life changing experience.

It just made me think, how long till some of the major manufacturers start to adopt some of the interior ideas? Looking at some of the new vehicles like Honda, VW etc, the interior looks so dated now in comparison.

I can't even to begin to describe the feeling after and getting into my 2002 Honda.

    Re: Tesla

Friend has a P90D with ludicris mode. Its fast, and it drives itself. The screen is cool, but you couldn't give me the car. Meh. I'd keep the seats and let the yuppies keep them. So boring. If it wasn't fast, I'd care even less.

      Re: Tesla

I am not the biggest fan, I enjoy them pushing tech and giving people an alternative but as an automotive enthusiast it sort of starts to signal a radical change which I am not too keen about. I am not quite sure on the obsession to have autonomous drive, I like to drive, but I guess many people do not, and I think those screens are too big with too much going on, and really change the focus of the cockpit from the driver too. The SUV is not that attractive to me, and the doors seem a bit unnecessary and a big reason why the reliability has plummeted on Consumer Reports.

Anyway they are extremely common in Hong Kong, I can see in a place like that reducing pollution is important but I also think they are a status symbol at the moment still in most places.

        Re: Tesla

I really like that Tesla has put the fire under everyone to create better electric cars.
Also their work on auto piloting cars is very promising.

I still don't think the technology is ready yet so I'm not going to buy.
Also not the biggest fan of the interiors actually.

And remember, your Honda costs a fraction of the Tesla.

          Re: Tesla

CGY_GTI raised a good point on the other VW Atlas Thread. Something I had not considered.

'This is why I really like the current VW interiors - they're clean looking and they still have physical controls. I HATE the idea of everything being on a single touch screen for a few reasons. First of all, you actually have to look at what you're doing in order to control them, you can't just rely on feel to know what you're doing, so you're forced to take your eyes off the road. If you're on a bumpy road, it's also a lot more difficult to use the controls because your hand inevitably ends up moving and you don't end up doing what you're actually trying to do. Some of the touch screen systems are still very buggy too. A family member was looking at a new XC90 last year and ultimately didn't end up buying it partially because of all the issues related to the touch screen - they were freezing up and the only way to reset them was to disconnect the battery, but until you did that you literally had no control over the HVAC, radio, nav, bluetooth, etc.'

The Tesla is a huge shift.. I recall sitting in the SUV whilst it self drove and thinking... wow this is the future. Blair, I have no idea how a self driving car will work in London. lol
I think I'l be driving the Honda for the while yet, it just keeps running...

            Re: Tesla

I think self driving is only going to work with all cars, cannot be a mix of self and human drivers, and I think they will probably need to have some communication between them as well. Doesn't sound all that fun, but I am not sure if I will be a regular driver anytime soon anyway.

Self driving cars are for the cattle that don't appreciate "the drive"... I hope I am done driving by the time that is the legal way to go from point A to B.
