  • Press in Control Arm Bushings

    Hey guys,

Last night I went around the steps to pull out the control arms from my MK4 to replace the bushings with R32 bushings. My plan of using a ball joint press isn't working because the one I rented is too small...

Would anyone have a larger tool / press to give me a hand?

I do have another vehicle so I can come to you, but preferably not deep South. I'm in NE near Carzilla.

    Thanks!

I've seen guys use thick threaded rod, a couple big nuts to lock onto each other and large washers to hold them, otherwise you'll have to pay a shop to do them. I'd give Colin a call at Calgary Auto works...they have the proper press and inserts.

Yeah I've seen the rod / washer method too don't have anything lying around but in the end might be worth a try.

Yeah waiting to see if someone is around Calgary Autoworks that could help me out today. Thanks!

Re: Press in Control Arm Bushings

Tried with a threaded rod, couple nuts / washers and appropriate sized hole saws. The saws just started to bend inward from the nuts tightening down. 😱

I've seen where people cut the rubber insert out, then cut out the aluminum ring, but the thing seems so seized in there don't want to somehow not be able to get the ring out.

Cut rubber, cut ring, press in new bushing with lube. Done

I know... I was too chicken to do that...

But huge shout out to Calgary Autoworks. Called them randomly and they were able to kindly pop them in for me. 👍

Going back in the car tonight.

            Thanks guys.

Re: Press in Control Arm Bushings

I have always done this as a DIY.

Jigsaw to cut out the middle rubber, then jigsaw the aluminum ring. Use a punch and relieve the pressure. Use two large C clamps to press the new ones in.

Glad CAW got you sorted out though

That's for the rear axle beam, not the front control arm bushings.

Wrong tool. This is for the rear beam bushings specifically, he is referring to the lower control arms in the front.

I have used 2x4's with a large bench vise before. Just drill a hole in one side to allow space for the center of the bushing.
