  • Rebuilding a Salvage Vehicle

Hey everyone, I'm looking into getting my Jetta rebuilt if it's getting a salvage title. And here's the most helpful info I've found so far https://www.transportation.alberta.ca/2822.htm
but I have a few questions.

What is this "in progress" inspection? Can this be done in BC at a reputable frame and body shop?
Does the final inspection have to be done in Alberta? Or can a BC inspection technician inspect it according to alberta standards?
Can the car be repaired in BC and taken back to Alberta for final inspection?

Here's a few reason's why I want to get my car repaired in BC
    1. I can save the hassle of shipping this car 1000km and avoid further shipping damage.
    2. I have a very good friend at a very reputable shop here in Vancouver that can repair the damage.
    3. The price just to get the car repaired completely and fully repainted is a considerable amount less than in Calgary.

I also have another plan, that is to let my mom sell the car to me and I'll fix it in BC, go through BC inspection and register it as a BC car. As a student in BC I don't require a BC license to register a car in BC.

PS: Let's keep the replacing the vehicle plan down for now because I want this car repaired.

The only thing that dictates where the vehicle is to be inspected, is where do you want to register the vehicle. I would personally re inspect it in Alberta since it was an Alberta registered car to begin with and you will most likely be staying in Alberta when done school, this way you do not have to do an out of province inspection at a later date. You can have it repaired by your friend, document it like we were discussing and then when its ready for inspection, bring it to alberta for reinspection. Keep in mind that they dont look at just the damaged area, they Inspect the whole vehicle. Much like an out of province inspection, so ensure all lights, suspension, braking, safety components work, no CEL can be on, All seat belts must work, DRL's must operate, etc,

it also depends on whether it gets a repairable or non repairable salvage title, I do not know if it is the same in BC but in Calgary there is allot less people who can re-certify a salvage title car so little choice on who you take it to.

If it gets deemed not repairable, You are SOL, there isnt a way to re register that Vin, EVER! haha. I bought a Flood damaged Golf R a few years back, Car was actually perfect besides the smell, But it was deemed a non repairable vehicle. SO, the drivetrain was pulled and went into a Fahrenheit.

Any flood vehicle is automatically non-repairable in Canada.

What kind of damage does it have?
