  • Formula 1 2016 Thread

Well with the season getting under way over the weekend thought we might get a thread going again this year.

Obviously the new qualifying format was an epic failure and hence why it has already been scrapped. Nothing like having no cars on track for the last 4 minutes or so...

The race was fairly exciting, a few good passes, the three tire choices seemed to lead to some different strategies and that Alonso crash, wow he is a lucky man.

In the UK we have switched to Channel 4 coverage compared to the old BBC and obviously having commercials sucks (live races are said to be commercial free), but they have retained a strong part of the team with Edwards and Coulthard doing the commentating.

what an awesome race! that start was just what i was hoping for this season. well up until the red flags. at least there was still a bit of excitement in the second half of the race but it sure was a shame to miss it all unfold. glad Alonso is ok. also surprised to see the new HAAS car place well, even if they got the free pitstop. it sure seemed like all the cars were somewhat evenly matched, which provided for some good racing.
you probably don't like me because someone else said they didn't lol. <3

Just watched the GP today... so much goodness already this season. Highlights for me were:
            - Hamilton not winning
            - Ferrari looking strong this year
            - Honda not at the back for a change
            - HAAS not in last
            - Jolyon Palmer driving like a boss
            - Verstappen 'Whiney-Curse-fest' at Sainz was awesome!

Here's to a great year ahead. Can't wait for Bahrain!

              Re: Formula 1 2016 Thread

F1 still has it's major problem of the cars not being able to follow each other as they spend just as much time working on disturbing the air behind the cars as they do trying to make them slippery. Mercs couldn't close the gap on the Ferrari's and mr swears a lot Verstappen even after he spun was gaining over 1.5 secs a lap on Sainz then still couldn't get by when he caught him again!

They need to mandate a front wing with only one flap on each side and a only a double upper element on the rear then let them get downforce from under the cars not on top where it messes everything up.

The difference seems to be those mediums between Mercedes and Ferrari, perhaps over compensation by Ferrari for what happened in Australia.

I think Merc was real smart about the medium compound tires this year. Pretty much all of their pre-season practice was done on that compound tire and they made sure the car was fast and could go real far on it. Now they don't need more than one set of them for a race weekend in case they need a long stint throw them on and go for miles. If they ever get behind in a race similar to race 1 one they pit early change to the medium compound get out front and go to the end of the race and make the other cars have to pass them which is almost impossible due to the Mercs air disturbance package.

The tyre selection destroyed Ferrari's chance of winning Australia.

No. Tires need to be picked something like 8 weeks before the races in Europe (14 or something for non-Euro races) so Ferrari wouldn't have known the outcome of the Australia race yet.
