Incredible, you take your car to get something simple like an oil change.

What is wrong with people, how hard was it to ask: "Sorry I've never had to do an oil change on this type of car, do you know how to remove the big plastic plate or can I borrow the user manual?"

Luckily Valvoline responded pretty quickly. They are paying for all damages and the tech was fired.

I used to work at a lube place back in the day, watched one of the guys light a customers entire engine bay on fire. Not sure what happened but he decided to wash off the engine with a little bit of washer fluid. Told the guy he could fire it up, he did, one of the wires arced and poof. Whole engine bay on fire. Had to get the fire extinguisher out.

I'm actually surprised that Valvoline was so quick to respond and offer a full refund. Good for them.

When I was very new to vehicle ownership and the city, I used to take my TDI to the lube place across from Peter's Drive-In. One instance after maybe 5 or 6 oil changes go by, a tech comes up to me and asks me "Did you know your skid plate is being held on with Baling twine?" I had recently been under there when I lowered my TDI and new this was a new occurrence, but had 0 way to prove they had done it. Last time I ever took my car to one of those. And any time I hear someone I know talk about going I tell them that story in a hopeful attempt to dissuade.
