    What do you do when...

You are behind someone and they have no lights on when they should be on?

    Or

You are in front of someone who has no lights on, or worse has high beams on?

I've been coming across a lot of drivers without their lights on lately(not really a surprise) , and last night kinda pissed me off. I was traveling southbound on deerfoot and someone changed lanes in front of me without their front or rear lights on. Super wet/rainy and visibility was not very good. So I gave him a quick flash of my high beams to try to get him to turn his on. Right away the a$$hole aggressively brake checked me. I was a few car lengths behind him not tailgating him at all so it didn't really do much but still... I had to brake and it slowed down traffic. So I just hopped into the left lane passed him and went on my way while he was cursing at me from the next lane over. /end mini rant story time

Do you guys flash your high beams to try and signal people to turn on their lights? Turn yours off then back on? Leave it alone? What do you do?

    I'm just curious.

Flashing your high beams means that people would need to be smart enough to understand what that means. Therefore I simply dont bother. They usually look at you like you're the idiot

People in NA seem to get really bent out of shape on the flashing of the lights thing, while else where they are used for many purposes and most not intended to piss you off.

As for the original idea, I suppose trying turning your lights off and on again might work but overall these people are probably in their own little world and the best advice is to just get away from them

Re: What do you do when...

I have seen more and more of this lately and it actually makes me upset when people are driving so dangerously. I can't turn my lights off while driving (DRL stuff) unfortunately so that isn't an option.

        Here is my procedure:
        - Get behind them (if you are ahead)
        - Two quick flashes of my high beams (within 1/2 second or so)
        - If that doesn't work ~3 seconds of high beams followed by 2 quick flashes

This has worked 20+ times over the past 2 weeks with most people (including two cops....) just needing the two quick flashes. People it seems just forget because they are used to driving so late without having to turn their lights on. It's getting to be that season for sure, and hopefully people will learn to turn their lights on or to understand what flashing lights really means.

Your story makes it sound like you were actually mad at him for cutting you off, hence his escalated reaction. If he didn't cut you off it might have been a different story. If people cut me off i try to wait 10-20 seconds before flashing them for the lights so it doesn't seem like i'm mad about them cutting me off.

No he definitely didn't cut me off, he just changed lanes. It wasn't a tight lane change or anything.

Maybe he assumed that I thought he cut me off or something. But like Blair said, I find that people get so pissed when you flash your lights at them. I'll probly try the off and on procedure or your way Sean.

Usually for me, when someone doesn't have their lights on I try to get beside them at a red light and get their attention and tell them. I think that the problem is with people having Hid's because you cant flash them or tell them to turn them off at night ... I myself had Hids, when people get them all they think is that they'll have better vision at night but they don't realize how blinding it is to the people in front of them.

I have been flashed before from an oncoming driver and my high beams were not on. So as P arkus said, i have no clue why i was flashed and i don't bother flashing others as well. Many times i have mistaken cars with OEM HIDs for high beams so i can see why someone would think i have high beams on.

I think a lot of drivers in this city believe that the logo below indicates that their headlights are turned on and don't realize that it is the high beam indicator.

I usually flash people without their lights on....then write down their licence plate number....then, using my Bluetooth, call the police, then honk my horn several times, and drive by them with a sign on my passenger window telling them to turn their lights on, then turn off at the next possible 7-11 haha
But seriously, I try to stay ahead or away from them...

I'm loving the trucks that drive with the LED light bars on. When you blind everyone, how are they supposed to notice your sweet metal mulisha decals?

Re: What do you do when...

I think one of the issues is that people in newer cars have interior lights in the console and dash that are always on, even when your night time lights haven't been turned on. This plus the DRL's give them the impression that everything is ok, but with the lower light output to the front and no rear light being on they are a disaster waiting to happen.

I flashed a guy as Sean had done on Deerfoot and he never understood. Luckily a cop pulled up behind him and flashed him some pretty red and blue lights instead and pulled him over for a chat.

Many cars have auto headlights as well, some of these seem to like to wait until it is quite dark before they turn on.

I flash people whoever I see them withy their lights on. In the city it bugs me but no where near as much as on the highway. It's scary passing when it's raining and you know there might be someone oncoming with no lights and not be able to see them. But I'll have to agree with what's been posted above, when you flash people here they usually have no clue or just get pissed off.
