  • A big THANK YOU to Bob (Bobkatkat) & Kyle (Smarty39)

I just want to extend a big thank you to these guys.

About 5 weeks ago my car suddenly went from running 100%, to not running at all.

Bob was at my place a couple of times a week helping with scanning and general diagnosis, while Kyle kindly leant me a set of backup coilpacks.

Having the coilpacks that were known to have been 100% allowed us to have a steady baseline to work from, without having to spend big $$$$.
The issue was peculiar, in that we had spark, air and fuel, but it would not burn a drop of it...just saturate the plugs and choke itself.

    After all of this:

    MAP Sensor - I've tried 2
    Coolant Temp Sensor - I've tried 2
Calibrated the TB - Just in case
    Checked all hoses visually
    All new plugs, gapped correctly
    New FPR
    New N75
    Have Spark huge spark
    Have air
    Compression Test carried out
    Pressure Tested the system
    Vac Tested the system
Replaced one broken green check valve
Wastegate Actuators are cracking at approx. 6-7PSI
Swapped out ECUs with another Stage 3 ECU - No difference

The issue was Shell V-Power purchased from the Shell station on 32nd & 12th Street Ave NE Calgary. I fueled up prior to the car stopping, and thankfully had the receipt.
After draining the tank on Saturday (and missing Driven), I ran Husky 94 through the system and the car is hitting 22PSI once more!

Having had ZERO VAG experience, I've now learned a huge amount, which I'd like to thank Bob for.

I can only imagine what the bill would have been if I had trusted it to a Shop, as the last thing they'd likely have suspected would have been the fuel.
Based on my last shop experience, and extrapolating, the bill would have been $127,445.26 + GST.

    Lessons learned -
    • Keep all fuel receipts (which I do)
    • Trust that a Shell Branch Manager will totally change their story, and lie to their insurance company
    • Stick to Husky 94, which I have done for 99% of my fuel ups over the last 3 years
    • If you suspect fuel, file a complaint ASAP (which I did 3 weeks ago)
    • Know that you will never see a cent in compensation if you don't bring it to a shop. I'm OK with this, as I'd rather not float $127,445.26 until it is sorted
    • Finally, you can count on the great community that you guys have here. I've had great backup from a few members on here, especially Bob.

    Thanks folks!

Shitty to hear about the troubles and it being as simple as bad gas.
I have actually had the opposite experience, I used to use husky 94 (doesn't really seem like 94 to be honest) and it gave me less fuel economy and problems every few fill ups, not to the extent that you had but a rough idle sometimes and a CEL popping on and off.
I switched over to shell v power and haven't had any problems since and I have only filled up with shell v power for the past 4 years.

I really would urge everyone to keep all receipts. I always have, as it is a little bit of OCD reassurance for when it comes time to sell (in proving that you're meticulous about what gas you use).
The gas station manager claimed I filled up with Diesel when asked for a statement from the insurance company, but thankfully I had the receipt.

Bob mentioned this on Sunday. Glad it's all cleared up bud! I always use Shell V Power and haven't had any issues before. But this is the second time that I've heard in the last few years where someone has filled up thinking it was gasoline and ended up with diesel.

Story from a couple of years ago...

I was glad to help. That is what these communities are for. Just wish we trusted your nose and did the gas first. This is not a V-power issue but most likely due to the timing of the fill-up and Shell launching their new V-power formula. They most likely ran the storage tanks down to almost empty and/or did a flush of the tanks without pumping out whatever they use when the switch over a tank. Most likely the fuel was very bad and whatever was in it was progressively settling out to the bottom and the car was getting worse and worse. The key thing is what Shell will do as a follow up to an issue that was 100% a fault with the gas? Time to step up Shell!

Silver lining is that you now know how to diagnose and fix 90% of the common issues with middle aged VAGs and could do them in an hour.
