  • Your car Fuel efficient? = Taxing drivers for distance driven

Have you ever heard of the vehicle miles traveled tax? No?

Well get ready to hear more about it, because the vehicle miles traveled tax, or VMT, is the latest way states in the USA are looking to make up for falling gas tax revenues.

Interest in the new tax has blossomed as states see their revenues shrinking from gasoline taxes - usually used for road maintenance. The decline results from new cars getting better gas mileage and thus less gasoline sold to be taxed.

The question of lost revenues with the gas tax arises especially with all-electric cars like the Prius, Leaf or Tesla models. Those motorists pay no gas taxes at all - although their electric bills do include some taxes.

The idea is to make the price you pay per mile about equal to what you pay now with the gas tax.

Here’s how it works, users will get a device that plugs into a vehicle’s on-board diagnostics port to gather mileage data used to determine the usage charge.

It also has a GPS locator beacon, relaying data about where you are, where you’re headed, and where you've been.

Of course they since they are in your ECU they also have access to other data stored in there, including your speed, rate of acceleration, angular velocity, whether you’re wearing a seatbelt and they can send commands back to the car.

Nothing is said about them reading such data or using it - yet.

Over 11 states are either in the process of passing legislation or are currently conducting trials programs.

Alberta just fixed this problem, they raised the gas tax to offset the efficiencies.

They probably should look at putting these on the pedal bikers to pay for those bike lanes down town.....

well im just curios as to how they would enforce someone disabling the GPS/KM logging abilities and hacking it to display a very minimum KM distance travelled while feeding a matched false GPS location tag. Unless they linked the pumps with the system so the pumps would log the amount of fuel you consumed. but again someone will find a way to not pay the bs fee

        All I'll say is this.

We're incredibly lucky here. If I were to drive my b5 s4 at home in Ireland, the annual road tax would be about $1900. For my old m5, it would be $2000+

Add to that an annual certification process that puts an OPI to shame.

Makes it hard to be an enthusiast.

It is about the same in all Europe, a lot more expensive to drive and a lot of things you cannot do on your car at all.
I am pretty sure than over half cars on Eurodrivers wouldn't be allow to be on the road, or they need to be put back close to factory at each OPI (inspection for cars older than 4 years and every 2 years after that).... kinda sad.

There are always ways around anything, the question is how difficult will it be and how easily will they spot your hack?

Paying road taxes is fine, being tracked 24/7 is not.

Cars with engine swaps, that aren't declared to the taxman, are confiscated and crushed.

              E30 s50
              E46 320 with s54
              Numerous e39 swaps.

That's just the last month, that I know of.
