What does everyone give for wedding gifts these days, $ value wise?
I usually give between $75 and $100 per person (so $150 to $200 if i'm with my gf) for 'local' weddings, and maybe $50-$75pp if it's a destination or wedding that I have to travel to, book a hotel, spend a weekend, etc. If someone is dragging out and requiring me to blow some of my vacation days and a good chunk of change to attend their wedding they're getting a gift to basically cover the cost of the meal. I've recently found out I'm apparently a cheap-ass lol so I'm curious what everyone else normally gives so I can realign my gift giving with the average!
Searching online mostly resulted in pretentious sounding ladies saying you have to spend X amount on gifts, and that anything other than open bars are cheap and tacky, and then all the commenters calling them b!tches haha
I've heard of some couples asking guests for basically a cover charge to attend to help cover the costs of getting married. I haven't received one of those invites yet, but if I ever did, there's no way I'd attend. Cut down on your wedding costs if you can't afford your own wedding!
EDIT: And I'm getting married this September. My Fiancee is originally from England, so we're especially not expecting anything at all from anyone travelling over that far. Partly because many of them aren't very well off, but even so - it's going to be damn expensive for them to travel all this way, so they don't need to be spending anymore on us. Local Cdn guests will probably give us a gift, but again unless it was somehow intentially insulting (like a haggard old $5 bill in a card), I don't think i'd be bothered at all at the amount we were given (or not given at all). We've set out budget, are keeping it relatively low cost, and WE'RE spending all this money on a party for ourselves and our close friends and family. We're not factoring in or expecting guest gifts to help pay for OUR wedding.
