  • Changing dealerships

Starting to look into changing where my career is going. I'm looking for some info before doing so and any help would be great

Looking at moving to either VW or Audi. Now my big question is... what is tech wage? When I was at mazda tech wage started at $27/hour and at ford its $38/hour

Also with either of these brands do you require and "special training" so that you can perform repairs?

Honestly I am getting tired of handing specific jobs off at ford because I am not factory certified.... warranty brakes specifically

Any advise would be appreciated, looking at moving in the next year. Pm me if you wanna discuss it privately

    Re: Changing dealerships

Sometimes it is not about how much an hour you get paid but how much work is aviable through the shop, more hours = more pay but more pay does not = more hours, how much of that work is warranty and is retail.
In any dealership training is key but again that can work against you as the better training you have the more diagnoses you seem to get, unless the (dispacther ) or foreman
realizes that your work is good and you work hard that hopefully he will help you out when you have a bad day.
What $$$ range are you at year end? What do you think is possible? What training do you have and how long have you had a lic?
another thing is most guys that go from domestic or asian cars to euro have a tough time adjusting as the thinking behind building the cars is different, but if you give yourself a chance and
not afraid of a steep learning curve, Good luck much to think about.
Make sure you make a move because you want to and have thought about it not because your unset in the moment.
    Good luck
To answer your question, The manufacture that I work for does req training to do recalls but not warranty work, the good warranty work goes to the main shop the less paying go to the younger app, i.e.

Personally I would work at a domestic shop. Your training will be better transferable to other areas(geographically) should you decide to move later in life. Money may not be everything, you will need to decide for yourself the value of intagibles.

Why not ask your current employer for more training so that you can get into different jobs?

        Re: Changing dealerships

I am working on my training right now. This move also has to deal with personal issues at work, I hate being there. Plus with my accident earlier this year I'm really struggling

You guys are absolutely right. When I moved from mazda to ford it wasn't much of a change cause back in 09 most of the cars were the same besides adding the trucks to the line up

I know when it comes down to the money it really depends on the work. At mazda I could clear 120+ hours/pay period easily while at ford with what I do I range between 70-90. Ford is cheap when it comes to warranty repairs. For instance I have a few reprograms that I do that take my IDS about 0.7-1.0 to complete and than I review the TSB and it pays 0.3hrs. This is frustrating considering its something out of my control.

As for the training, I am doing it. But even if I complete it and get certified I might not get the work. Ford dealerships are done by specialities and stealing someone else's work is a death sentence.

I just don't want to be a Ford tech for the rest of my life and think the grass might be greener elsewhere

            Re: Changing dealerships

I went from ford to toyota, tsb/recalls/warranty is going to pay less anywhere, you'll notice it's the same mostly every where after a while with a different name on the building. For now I've given up on automotive, and make just as much money working construction, with less stress and head aches.

Its hard thinking about this, probably will stick to where I am at for a bit. To much to think about right now and with whats going on its probably safer to stay there
