  • Winter Tires to Summer Tires

Hey guys, since it's my first year in Calgary, I wanted to ask you guys whats the best time to put on my summer wheels? (Currently running on studded winters and would love to get my summer's on ASAP). Yet my roommates say to wait after the May snow storm, that anything before that is stupid... Few colleagues at work say mid April is a safe bet.

Basically I just don't want to screw up another set of wheels like I did in the fall..

Should I really wait until May?

    Thanks!

Unless you have another car, I would suggest waiting till May also.

Hmm I think it depends how often you drive.

You can always check out Calgary snowfall stats http://calgary.weatherstats.ca/metrics/snow.html and do an assessment on whether or not a few days of snowfall would affect you.

Yeah no other car, I don't drive much though maybe 25km a day max (when I work that is)..

I'll wait it out and see what April brings us, going back East towards the end of April for 8-9 days.

Might wait until after I come back then do the switch.

            Thanks!

Re: Winter Tires to Summer Tires

I've defiantly woken up to a foot of snow and swapped them back before going to work (or taken the wife's car with winters)...

So the advise to wait longer is not bad!

^Do you have a pressure gun to swap them before going to work? If I had to do that I would have to wake up at 4am LOL

assuming the tires are not buried somewhere - I can do a swap in about 25mins... haha.

I use a little bosch cordless impact.

Teach me master! Hahaha I always have a hard time aligning the wheel with the bolt holes, and getting the bolt to fit without the wheel moving/falling off... Then again I don't have a cordless impact gun either..

Do you use the wheel alignment pin from your tool kit to hold the wheel in place when mounting or removing the wheels. I always use two to keep from banging the calipers before i went studs.

afaik, vw doesn't supply the pins, at least none of mine did, but my a4 does. They're nice to have, especially if you buy a nice metal one. Other than that stud conversion helps.

My Passat has one. Previous MK4 did not.
