  • Wireless Remote Access Thermometer?

Hey guys trying to get something set up so I can have a remote access thermometer as we have been having some troubles with the furnace staying lit and I'm away most weekends.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Looking for something that would connect to wifi that would maybe send notifications to my phone?

I've looked and seen options in the $100+ range, looking to set two up though so hoping to maybe do something slightly more cost effective?

    Suggestions? Arduino? Ez-robot?

im in the same boat, where i travel a lot and would like to get better tabs on my house, hard to find something that is truely cost effective.

there is a used one of those honeywell units for sale on one of the forums, seems to be the cheapest option.

Sorry Colin, the wifi stats we deal with are all well over a $100 cost, retail is usually over $200. Although they are fantastic, I prefer the Honeywell's over the White Rogers Sensi
I may appear to be nice, but don't be fooled, I probably don't like you

We use the NEST. It's a bit pricey but so far it has been worth it. It also syncs with their Smoke/Carbon Monoxide detector.

I've got the color touchscreen Honeywell unit. It's been awesome. Was an open box unit in ebay for around $140

Aartech, mentioned above, is pretty good to deal with. None of the home automation stuff is super cheap, but there are some ok options for not too too much. I went with zwave. I have both my fireplace and furnace on zwave thermostats. If the house temp drops too low, I get a text and email, and I can connect and turn on the fireplace as a backup. I did this because my furnace was being stupid too. It was a few hundred bucks for the controller and 2 thermostats though. Lots of options for expanding the system later though!

The better question would be "why is the furnace not lighting?"
Staying lit? You have an old school standing pilot?

For sure that is step 1. With mine, it was serviced and operating in spec, but the pilot would still go out every few weeks. There was nothing really to fix, as nobody could pinpoint the cause. After a year of that, it was nice comfort to have a backup. After leaving multimeters on a few sensors myself, I was able to find a high-limit shutoff switch that was being intermittently flakey. Swapped that, and so far so good... I've had a few friends with new furnaces with the spark ignite, where the ignitor consistantly fails every two years, more or less. It's nice to know when it happens, as even though you are supposed to have someone check on your house when you are gone, a day with no furnace at -20 is still too long.

I'm not looking for a thermostat, already have that under control.

                    I'm looking for a therMOMETER.

Just looking for a little module that could sit next to my router and let me know if the temp drops to a certain point. Havent been at home so I havent had a chance to do anymore research. I'll check out the zwave though Stefan.

Ahh.. I use the thermometer in my thermostat
I think there are temp senders for zwave, so may still be an option, but you need a zwave controller first, which I think starts around 120$ +, so together, it may start getting out of the price range you are after.

I have a honeywell prestige 2.0 that I bought and installed on both furnaces when I built my house 2 years ago. I have the Internet module as well so I can log in and check things out. For just a thermometer go zwave, even the thermostat cheaper options have come out since I got my house.
