  • Buying Vehicle from Stateside as Salvage

Hey guys, I'm very tempted to purchase a passat 3.6 through auctions as they can be bought for a very low price, and importing is only $75+GST, i'm looking at both salvage title and clean titled cars. I have a few questions.
    1. can a buy a car in USA with candian passport/id?
    2. if the car is clean title, can i drive it to the boarder with a temporary license?
    3. what is the fastest way to get the documents to the boarder?
    4. are there agencies that import cars as salvage titles?

    1. can a buy a car in USA with candian passport/id? - Just show cash and its yours :P . Make sure you get the title

    2. if the car is clean title, can i drive it to the boarder with a temporary license? - yes, need temp insurance as well

    3. what is the fastest way to get the documents to the boarder? Fax or use a broker. I usually use a broker. Really doesnt add much

    4. are there agencies that import cars as salvage titles? Just import it yourself, Same as any other car. If its damaged its like 200 to import. Or if you are stripping it just import it as a parts only car

I have never imported a car myself before, how would you deal with auctioning a car and importing it yourself?

i looked at importing a salvage once. After talking with numerous people the risk was not worth it. It needs a full salvage inspection in canada to get registered, i was told if it fails you cannot fix it and try again, it must be used as parts only. This was about 4 years back so it may have changed.

That doesn't sound any different than buying a salvage car in Canada.

My guess is Kuji is only lookin for the engine, and he will just part the rest out

He wants to import it just for the engine so i don't think he runs the risk of not getting it safety inspected/approved.

Re: Buying Vehicle from Stateside as Salvage

I'm looking to do the same thing, except I want to be able to drive it so it will have to pass inspection.

I found out that there is one thing to be careful of, even though in the auction the car may have been promoted with a specific title (clean, salvage, etc.) it does not mean that this is the title it will have at the end of the auction. The title can change when the auction inspector reviews it before you pick it up, and there isn't anything you can do about it.

Yeah I don't want to drive the car in Canada, I'll drive up to the boarder then tow it with a uhaul truck across the boarder.
This is the website I'm looking at now for cars from the states http://www.salvageautosauction.com/m...UEFTU0FUIDMuNg
I don't really know where to look in Canada other than impact auto. Im not worried about having a clean title or not because at most I'll tow it myself, but it'll just be easier on my wallet if I don't need to tow it the entire way(drivable status in the states, tow in Canada).
Also the car would be destined for the junk yard after it crosses the boarder lol
P.S thanks for the link Tracy!

Canada has Impact, SGI, Copart and I think there is BC auction as well but I dont use it.

How would you drive the car to the border if its salvage? Most are not in drive able condition. Unless its hail

                          Would this work?

                          Buy vehicle
Park on empty lot on street corner in sketchy neighbourhood
Remove engine and put in the back of your truck
Leave car where it is and drive back to Canada
