Re: Winter car opinions?
Buying a RWD winter car just strikes me as plain dumb. Sorry but it does. If you're sliding out in an AWD, then yes you are overconfident but that's dependent on the driver.
Buy an EVO if you're leaving towards it, it's not like they're expensive. Get some winters on it and it will be a monster.
Trust me, AWD is plenty of fun in the winter still..Evan

Re: Winter car opinions?
Last year I drove a RWD car all winter for the first time and it was nowhere near as bad as everyone was saying it was going to be. I only got stuck twice and that was in super rutted back alleys and such. It's honestly not that bad at all, just get a decent set of winter tires. Coming from owning an AWD car for winters I can say owning a RWD car in the winter was a lot more funLast edited by VanDamage; 06-15-2014, 03:38 AM.Levi.W

Re: Winter car opinions?
inexperienced kids and their priorities. ugh. to me , a winter car is usually something that is still decent to drive, but not necessarily "fun" as it's purpose is for safe winter driving, not the ability to do donuts at will. so choosing a winter car would require things like, heated seats, snow tires, FWD or AWD, new battery, and somewhat of a reliable brand. i wouldn't waste much money on something fancy as that's reserved for my summer ride. a winter car is utilitarian transport from A to B where i know i won't get stranded or stuck, or pissed if some idiot t-bones it, or i slide into a curb. in all my years of driving in calgary winters, my mk2 gti was the best winter car i have ever owned.you probably don't like me because someone else said they didn't lol. <3

Re: Winter car opinions?
I tried to run my 4Runner in RWD as much as possible last winter simply because it saved a lot of gas over running it in 4WD. It had pretty much brand new M+S tires on it (not winters) but it still pretty useless in RWD unless the roads were pretty much dry. It was actually kinda fun despite the fact that they're painfully slow but it got such bad mileage when it was in 4WD... couldn't get rid of it fast enough. I'm actually kinda looking forward to winter now that I have the Passat.Scott

I'm sure the mk3 would be fine in the winter if you got some good winters.
Since ive decided to invest so much money in the mk3, i want to atleast protect it. In my mind spending my money on a purpose built winter car makes more sense than spending it on forced induction or building my engine.Jason

My fwd have all been great but I've always ran dedicated winters same with the rwd's I've owned. The Volvo has dedicated winters and is a tank in the snow !12 Volvo XC 90

Re: Winter car opinions?
My 2006 Volvo s40 has been an amazing winter vehicle. All wheel drive (haldex) plus the 2.5l turbocharged engine has made it fun. The fact that I wasn't emotionally attached to the car at all was also a big plus when I hit the deer. The Volvo is also a tank in the winter. Extremely quiet, warm, reliable. I would definitely recommend if you have the money.

Re: Winter car opinions?
I can't believe you were gonna run that virtually rust free MK1 in the winter....couldn't you get a K car or Sunflower or Cavalier to ruin instead?! hahaha!
I'm stoked to have the B3 for winter but this may be the only one it ever sees! It's a pretty solid foundation for a swap and some bags
I've never owned a AWD car and going on 24 years of winter driving a FWD with some decent winters is all you need. AWD is probably more fun! I enjoyed having my 95 Toyota 4x4 as well and it was nice having a truck to pick up stuff in...wagon will work fine for that. Lots of options out there for ya just depends what you want to spend.
