  • Winter car opinions?

Hello all, now that my Mk1s gone (which was supposed to be my winter car) i can start to look at a replacement. Ive wanted a Mazda RX8 for as long as i can remember now, but lately ive been looking more and more at old Evos. Both these cars fit my budget, obviously the Mitsubishi will be a better performer in the winter, but not as fun as the Mazda.

Honestly pretty torn right now, I 100% prefer the styling and comfort of the RX8, but does the Evo's performance and practicality outweigh the Mazda?

Aren't RX8's dirt cheap now because they are getting close to costly apex seal failures?

Yup, so are Evo 4s, cause theyre inferior to the Evo 5 in every way possible.

Ide probly advise against rwd...... Get something reliable/fwd first, and then awd if you can afford it.

It's not really that bad. I drove my 335i on bald winters last winter... And it was firmly planted to the ground.

Yeah, RWD isnt bad, but im leaning towards the Evo. They hold theyre value extremely well, and i can sell an Evo anyday and buy an RX8 anyday, not vice versa...

Rwd may not be "that bad" but it's just how amazing awd is. I can't see myself ever going back to fwd, or doing rwd if I live in this city. for a young kid like Jason who doesn't have many years driving experience, awd would just be better too.

I suppose, but what my parents said makes sense. RWD gets dangerous if youre used to FWD or AWD, not knowing the limits of the drivetrain and how to correct things properly. They grew up in this city with nothing but RWD, they learned on it.

Im not arguing RWD vs AWD here, i agree with you, awd is just better. And thats why im leaning towards that Evo, atleast for a year or two...

To me AWD was always a false safety net. I drove a B5 A4 and a B5.5 Passat in winter for a year each, and they made me feel a bit too confident. I would always find myself hitting a turn too hard and sliding out. In my bimmer and my Infiniti G35 (which I ran nokian studded tires on) I behaved.

I'm a moron though, so theres that.

                      Sorry, really off topic.

                      Why not a older A4/Passat?

                          Get a GC8D

                          Then let me drive it.

Jason is an evo fan boy, he hate subaaaaruuuus. If anything he should get a GC8V though...
It doesn't matter what drivetrain it is, it all depends on how responsible the driver it is, 2wd winter drivers aren't necessarily responsible drivers, and 4wd winter drivers aren't necessarily cocky people either.
I would totally prefer an AWD car over anything for winter just because it is extra insurance to not get stuck on a hill.
