  • Advice on breaking free a stubborn bolt

Not exactly car related, but y'all might know none the less. Recently picked up a Springfield M1A and I'm trying to get the gas plug out so I can put it in a troy battle chassis... But the bastard wont break free. It's now 100% stripped, and being that it's a precision rifle, most of the things I would do to break a bolt free on a car don't apply. Already ordered a new gas plug, so as long as I don't obliterate the threads all is well.

Anyone have any advice to break free a bolt of a somewhat sensitive piece of equipment? I'm thinking I may have to use a stripped bolt extractor.

Is it just the head that's stripped, or are the threads stripped?

If it's just the head that's in the picture, I think a vise would hold it fairly well.

Vise grips or a vise Yeah. If it stripped I doubt an easy out will help, it'll break before it breaks loose. Heat might work too but not too much.

A good set of channel locks would probably hold well enough to get it out as well. You could potentially just weld a nut on top of it and then try and use a regular socket to spin it out.

The problem with a vice is that torques the action and can cause damage. I am trying to find the M1A tool meant to hold it with you remove it, but no luck.

This did the ticket! Threw a 1/2 one over the bastard and gave her...

Some idiot at springfield armories coated the thing in oil before test firing it, carbon locking the threads together.
