    Re: World Cup 2014 Thread

    GO POLAND!!! wait.... :(

Since that's not happening, i'll most likely be cheering for Portugal and Netherlands. As always, Portugal has a great team on paper, but we'll see what they actually bring to the pitch. Netherlands doesn't seem to have as strong of a team this year, but they've always been known to pull some upsets and surprises.

As much as I hate to say it, Germany will definitely be a strong competitor this year. They have a very solid team. I always cheer for Spain too, but after winning 3 major tournaments in a row, I want to see someone else win it.

I've given a solid effort to try to appreciate and enjoy soccer, but I just can't do it. If Slovenia, Canada, or Hungary were competing, I'd cheer for them. Alas, they are not so I'll have to cheer for Spain, my BIL's team. I'll probably watch the last few minutes of the final.

As already said that was Germany, but the games in Manaus this year are being played in the heart of the Amazon and the temps will be 30 but I think the humidity never drops below 80%, I just looked and it was sitting at a pleasant 94%. That will be a big issue for playing in, plus the early reports have the pitch looking terrible there too. I guess the English should have plenty of excuses if the opening game Saturday does not go well.

Only a few hours now till opening kick-off, the atmosphere should be nuts!!!

The penalty was questionable, I just hate to see calls like that severely impact the outcome of the game, especially as Croatia was building momentum. Brazil looks weak to the counter attacks too.

That call was ridiculous, the guy was never touched. Don't they use an instant replay system to check the validity of any calls?

The only technology that has been introduced has been the goal line tech to determine if the ball fully crossed the line or not.

There has been a ton of discussions in FIFA, UEFA and the club governing bodies whether or not to bring in instant replay. So far the consensus is that instant replay will cause too much of a delay in the flow of the game so it hasn't been adopted yet.

Oh dear... what happened to the Spanish Armada..? They should not have had that penalty, Diego Costa totally played that.
Oh well Robbin got his own back. Van Percy's first goal... what a beauty...

Well it has been quite a goal fest thus far and I don't think anyone is too upset about that. England lost, but they did not look horrible and with Uruguay losing too, getting out of the group is still possible I think, but the next game is must win for sure.

The controversies have died down a little but I have heard rumors of a challenge system being introduced in the future to allow managers to have a couple calls a game looked at by the officials, perhaps a good compromise of time issues and getting some mistakes overturned.

I know they were only playing Honduras (who played very physical) but France looked pretty good with their young squad and they have a fairly easy group too!
